Chapter 4 - The Diamond Trap

🚨 FRAMED AT THE ALTAR! THE COLD-BLOODED TRAP THAT BACKFIRED ON MANHATTAN’S MOST POWERFUL WOMAN!Ten minutes later, the ethereal beauty of Lily’s performance was violently shattered.
The ballroom doors burst open once again, but this time, it was two uniform New York City police officers leading the way, flanked by a hysterical Claudia Whitcomb.
"Officers, there she is!" Claudia shouted, pointing a manicured finger directly at Rosa, who was now sitting at a side table with Lily, trying to comfort the confused toddler. "That’s the woman! She’s been sneaking into the private dressing rooms all night under the guise of serving champagne!"
The entire ballroom erupted into chaos. Vanessa stood by the stage, crossing her arms with a triumphant smirk. Julian looked anxious but remained silent, terrified of his aunt’s wrath but equally terrified of Marcus.
The older police officer looked uncomfortable but stepped toward Rosa. "Ma'am, we received a report of a grand larceny. A diamond bracelet valued at eighty-five thousand dollars went missing from the bridal suite."
Rosa stood up, her face turning completely white. "What? No! I haven't been anywhere near the bridal suite! I’ve been in the kitchen and on the stage the entire time!"
"She’s lying!" Claudia yelled, ensuring her voice carried across the room to the listening ears of New York’s high society. "We checked the staff lockers and the prep area. My security team found my missing diamond bracelet tucked right inside that disgusting, filthy canvas bag she brought with her! Along with a wallet containing her ID!"
Claudia’s associate held up a clear plastic evidence bag. Inside, glittering under the ballroom lights, was the diamond bracelet, sitting right next to Rosa’s worn, faded wallet.
"Mama?" Lily whimpered, pulling at Rosa’s skirt. "Are the police men going to take you away?"
"No, baby, no," Rosa wept, kneeling down to hold her daughter. "I didn't take anything, Lily. I swear to you, I didn't take anything!"
"Ma'am, we’re going to need you to come down to the precinct for questioning," the officer said, reaching for his handcuffs.
"Step away from her," a voice commanded from the shadows of the stage.
Marcus Cole stepped forward. He didn't look angry; he looked entirely at peace, the kind of peace a predator feels right before it snaps its jaws shut. He held a sleek black tablet in his hand.
"Marcus, please don't defend this criminal," Claudia said, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. "I know you were moved by the child’s singing, but these people are professionals. They use their children to gain sympathy while they rob us blind."
"It’s interesting you say that, Claudia," Marcus said, tapping the screen of the tablet. The massive projection screens behind the orchestra—intended to show a slideshow of the bride and groom—suddenly flickered to life.
Instead of photos of Vanessa and Julian, a high-definition security camera feed began to play. The timestamp on the video read exactly twelve minutes ago.
The entire ballroom gasped. The video clearly showed Claudia Whitcomb sneaking into the dark staff prep room, looking frantically around, and then pulling a diamond bracelet from her purse and shoving it deep into a faded canvas tote bag before slipping away.
"The Grand Belmore Hotel uses a security infrastructure designed and monitored by Cole Cybernetics," Marcus said, his voice dropping like an anvil into the silent room. "I control every camera, every sensor, and every pixel in this building. Did you really think you could stage a robbery in my house, Claudia?"
May you like
Claudia’s face drained of color. She staggered backward, looking at the screen in absolute horror. "I... Marcus, this is a misunderstanding! I was just... I thought she had already stolen it, and I was—"
"Officers," Marcus interrupted, pointing to Claudia. "Arrest that woman for filing a false police report, attempted grand larceny by proxy, and defamation of character. I will personally ensure the district attorney denies bail."
