CHAPTER 10 — THE LAST MEMORY

One year later.
The world called it The Lazarus Trials.
Every major television network covered the verdict.
Scientists testified.
Survivors reunited with their families.
Governments outlawed every known form of illegal memory manipulation.
Adrian Cross was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
Director Zero remained alive but never spoke another word.
The nightmare was finally over.
Or so everyone believed.
I had started a new life.
My real name was restored.
I moved into a small house overlooking the ocean with my parents and Noah.
For the first time in years...
I slept without medication.
Without fear.
Without checking the bedroom door at 2:47 every morning.
Then, one rainy afternoon, Agent Brooks arrived carrying a sealed evidence box.
"We found something."
"What is it?"
"The last notebook."
Not Adrian's.
Mine.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The first pages were filled with handwriting I instantly recognized.
My own.
Every page had been written before my memories were erased.
The final entry was dated exactly three days before my disappearance.
It read:
If you're reading this, it means I failed. Adrian has already found me. If he succeeds, everyone will believe I'm his victim. But there's something no one else knows...
I turned the page.
My heart stopped.
I volunteered.
The room fell silent.
Agent Brooks looked at me.
"What does that mean?"
I continued reading.
Months before my kidnapping, I had secretly agreed to infiltrate Project Lazarus alongside an international task force.
The plan was simple.
Allow Adrian to believe he had broken me.
Collect evidence from the inside.
Expose the entire organization.
But something went terribly wrong.
Adrian altered the drugs.
The temporary memory suppression became permanent.
The investigator...
Had truly become the victim.
Tears rolled down my face.
Everything I had fought to remember...
I had chosen to forget.
Then one final envelope slipped from the notebook.
It contained a single photograph.
On the back, I had written only one sentence.
"If I survive... forgive me for becoming someone I no longer recognize."
Noah quietly wrapped his arms around me.
"You came back."
I smiled through my tears.
"So did you."
Three months later, the abandoned Lazarus facility was demolished.
Every tunnel collapsed.
Every laboratory disappeared beneath concrete forever.
Or so the official report claimed.
Thousands of miles away...
A construction crew clearing debris discovered a rusted steel door hidden beneath the foundation.
Inside was a room no investigator had ever found.
No equipment.
No computers.
Only one wooden chair facing an old television.
The screen suddenly flickered to life.
Adrian appeared.
Calm.
Smiling.
"You've reached the final archive."
"If you're watching this... then you've already destroyed everything I wanted you to find."
He leaned closer to the camera.
"But you never asked the only question that mattered."
He smiled.
"Who erased my memory?"
The video ended.
The workers stared at one another.
None of them noticed the small green light beneath the television blinking once...
...then going dark.
Six months later, I visited Adrian in prison one final time.
He looked older.
Weaker.
Broken.
When the guard left us alone, he stared at me for several seconds.
Then he frowned.
"I'm sorry..."
His voice was barely a whisper.
"Have we met before?"
I searched his face for deception.
There was none.
The prison doctors later confirmed something impossible.
Every memory Adrian had before his arrest...
Was gone.
Completely erased.
No disease.
No injury.
No explanation.
As I walked out of the prison, I finally understood.
Someone else had always been watching.
Someone powerful enough to erase the memories of the man who spent his life stealing everyone else's.
The true architect of Project Lazarus had never been Adrian.
Or Director Zero.
They had only been pieces on someone else's chessboard.
I stepped into the sunlight, holding Noah's hand tightly.
For the first time, I wasn't afraid of what I couldn't remember.
Because some memories are meant to be recovered.
And some secrets...
May you like
Are buried for a reason.
THE END.
