CHAPTER 4 — The Shot That Changed Everything

The gun was aimed straight at Ethan's chest.
The entire park fell into terrifying silence.
Lily clung to her father's leg, trembling.
"Daddy..."
Before Ethan could react—
BANG!
A gunshot echoed across the park.
People screamed.
Birds exploded into the sky.
Ethan instinctively threw himself over Lily, waiting for the pain.
But it never came.
Instead...
Someone else collapsed.
Benjamin.
The bullet had ripped through his shoulder as he pushed Ethan out of the way.
Blood spread across his white shirt.
"Ethan..." he gasped.
"Run..."
Adrian slowly lowered his hand.
"I said I wanted the child alive."
"You were never part of the deal."
His security team rushed forward.
Ethan grabbed Lily and sprinted across the park.
Behind them, terrified families scattered in every direction.
Sirens wailed in the distance.
For a brief moment, Ethan thought they might escape.
Then Lily suddenly stopped running.
"Daddy..."
"My dollar..."
The crumpled one-dollar bill had slipped from her tiny hand.
It floated across the pavement before landing beside an old homeless veteran sitting quietly on a bench.
The elderly man picked it up.
He looked at the bill...
Then froze.
His weathered fingers traced a tiny blue star drawn in one corner.
His expression changed instantly.
"Where did this come from?"
Lily pointed at Ethan.
"My daddy gave it to me."
The old man's eyes filled with disbelief.
Slowly, he reached into his coat and pulled out another one-dollar bill.
It had the exact same blue star.
And the exact same serial number sequence—except for the last digit.
Benjamin, still bleeding on the ground, saw the bills.
His face turned ghostly pale.
"No..."
"It wasn't destroyed..."
The old veteran stood up.
His back straightened.
His shaky voice suddenly became calm and commanding.
"I've been looking for those bills for twenty-five years."
Adrian's confident smile disappeared.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
Very afraid.
"Eleanor..." Adrian whispered.
"You told me every witness was dead."
The elderly woman closed her eyes.
"I believed they were."
The veteran slowly opened the inside of his faded army jacket.
Hidden beneath it was a small silver badge.
Not military.
Not police.
It carried the seal of a secret federal investigative unit that had been dissolved decades earlier.
He looked directly at Adrian.
"I was the accountant who documented every dollar your family stole."
"And that little one-dollar bill..."
"...is the final key to proving who really owns the Carter fortune."
Adrian's face drained of all color.
Without another word...
He pulled out his phone and shouted one chilling order.
"Forget the girl."
May you like
"Kill everyone else."
