CHAPTER 8 — The Truth Hidden Inside Vault Zero

Adrian's laughter echoed through the damaged radio.
"It was never about the money..."
"It was always about the name."
The transmission suddenly cut to static.
Ethan stared at the tiny golden key in Lily's hand.
"What does he mean?"
Rachel's face had lost all color.
She slowly sat on the side of the road, as if the weight of twenty years had suddenly fallen onto her shoulders.
"Emily swore I would never tell anyone..."
"But she also knew one day Lily would have to hear the truth."
Lily looked up innocently.
"Did Mommy keep another secret?"
Rachel nodded.
"Yes."
"The biggest one of all."
Before she could continue, the sound of helicopter blades thundered overhead.
The tactical team's aircraft circled above, trying to locate them.
But another helicopter appeared from the opposite direction.
It was matte black.
No registration numbers.
No lights.
Only a silver wolf painted on its side.
Rachel whispered,
"They're here first..."
A rope dropped from the helicopter.
Masked men descended within seconds.
The tactical officers opened fire, forcing Ethan, Lily, and Rachel to run into an abandoned railway tunnel nearby.
Inside, it was cold, dark, and silent.
Only their footsteps echoed through the endless corridor.
After several minutes, Rachel stopped in front of a rusted steel door hidden behind collapsed bricks.
She took the golden key from Lily.
"It only fits one lock."
The key turned effortlessly.
Click.
The heavy door slowly creaked open.
Inside wasn't a room full of gold.
There were no diamonds.
No stacks of cash.
Instead...
Thousands of neatly organized files lined metal shelves from floor to ceiling.
Every folder carried a name.
Judges.
Senators.
Police commissioners.
Business tycoons.
Foreign bankers.
Every powerful person connected to the Carter empire.
At the center of the room stood a single fireproof safe.
On top rested an envelope.
Across the front, written in Emily's handwriting, were seven chilling words:
"Only Lily may open this after me."
Lily looked at Ethan.
"Can I?"
With tears in his eyes, Ethan nodded.
"You can."
Her tiny fingers carefully opened the envelope.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Rachel glanced at it...
Then gasped.
Benjamin, who had finally caught up despite his wounded shoulder, looked over her shoulder.
The color drained from his face.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Ethan grabbed the document.
His hands began to shake.
The certificate listed Lily's mother as Emily Carter.
But under Father...
It did not say Ethan Walker.
It did not say Benjamin Carter.
It did not say Adrian Carter.
Instead...
The name belonged to someone everyone believed had died twenty-eight years earlier.
Alexander Carter.
The legendary founder of the Carter empire.
The man whose funeral had been attended by presidents, billionaires, and world leaders.
Rachel whispered through trembling lips,
"Alexander never died..."
"He disappeared."
Benjamin slowly looked at Lily.
"If this certificate is real..."
"...then Lily isn't just an heir."
"She is the legal owner of everything."
Before anyone could absorb the revelation...
A slow clap echoed through the underground vault.
Clap...
Clap...
Clap...
A shadow emerged from the darkness.
An elderly man stepped into the light.
Gray hair.
Sharp blue eyes.
Perfectly tailored black suit.
He smiled at Lily as tears filled his eyes.
Then he spoke the words that froze everyone in place.
"Hello, my little granddaughter..."
May you like
"...I've waited six years to meet you."
