CHAPTER 7 — The Woman Emily Trusted With Her Life

The black pickup truck roared across the park.

"Get in!" the woman shouted again.

Bullets slammed into the ground behind Ethan.

He had no choice.

Holding Lily tightly, he jumped into the truck just as the driver floored the accelerator.

The tires screamed against the pavement.

Within seconds, the park disappeared behind them.

For nearly a minute...

No one spoke.

The mysterious woman kept her eyes on the road.

Finally, Lily noticed the silver pendant hanging around the woman's neck.

"That's Mommy's necklace..."

The woman smiled sadly.

"No, sweetheart."

"Your mother gave it to me."

Ethan turned sharply.

"Who are you?"

She took a deep breath.

"My name is Rachel Hayes."

"I was Emily's best friend."

"I've been hiding for six years."

Ethan stared at her in disbelief.

"Emily never mentioned you."

Rachel nodded.

"She couldn't."

"The fewer people who knew about me..."

"...the longer I'd stay alive."

She reached into the glove compartment and removed a small flash drive.

"I've been waiting for this day."

Ethan looked at the drive.

"What's on it?"

Rachel answered without hesitation.

"Everything."

"The Carter family's offshore accounts."

"Bribed judges."

"Secret murders."

"The names of every politician they bought."

Benjamin had risked his life for a key.

Emily had left a letter.

But Rachel...

Rachel had the digital proof.

Just then—

Rachel's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

Her face instantly turned pale.

"No..."

Ethan frowned.

"What is it?"

She whispered,

"They found the safe house."

Before anyone could react—

BOOM!

A massive explosion erupted behind them.

The blast wave lifted the pickup off the road.

The truck spun violently before crashing into a ditch.

Smoke filled the air.

Ethan pulled Lily from the wreckage.

"Daddy..."

"I'm okay..."

Rachel crawled out from the driver's side, blood running down her forehead.

She looked toward the burning highway.

A convoy of black SUVs was approaching through the smoke.

Too many to count.

"They tracked the flash drive," she said.

"They'll never stop."

Just then, Lily noticed something glittering beneath the damaged dashboard.

She reached down and picked it up.

It was a tiny golden key attached to a faded ribbon.

"Daddy..."

"I found this."

Rachel froze.

Her eyes widened in horror.

"Where did you get that?"

"It was under the seat."

Rachel slowly backed away.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

Ethan looked confused.

"What is it?"

Rachel swallowed hard.

"Emily hid that key before she disappeared."

"It opens a private vault..."

"...that no one has been able to find for twenty years."

Before Ethan could ask another question, Rachel looked at the key more closely.

Then she whispered words that made everyone's blood run cold.

"This isn't the key Emily hid..."

"...it's the master key."

"The one that controls every vault."

At that exact moment, Adrian's voice crackled through the truck's damaged radio.

"You've been chasing the wrong treasure."

"I never wanted the fortune."

"I only wanted that key."

Then he laughed.

A slow...

Terrifying laugh.

"Because the vault doesn't contain money..."

May you like

"It contains the identity of the person who truly ordered Emily's murder."
