Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

Blood Ties and Betrayal"What do you mean, he found the black box?" Ethan stood up, his heart hammering against his ribs. "You told me it was destroyed! You told me your family erased every trace!"

"My brother kept a backup," Claire said, pacing the room, her composure finally showing cracks. "He didn't trust me. He wanted leverage in case I ever tried to oust him from the company. Now he’s dead—overdosed in a hotel room last month—and his estate is in probate. The digital archives are leaking."

Nia stepped forward, her voice dripping with venom. "So the mighty Claire Whitmore is scared. The stock price might drop? The empire might crumble?"

Claire turned on Nia, her eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity. "If I fall, little girl, you fall with me. The non-disclosure agreement you father signed states that if any information leaks from your side, the three billion dollars is forfeited, and the criminal charges against Ethan for the cartel laundering are automatically filed with INTERPOL. You will watch your father rot in a European prison."

"We didn't leak anything!" Ethan shouted. "We've been ghosts for a decade!"

"It doesn't matter who leaked it," Claire hissed. "The public won't care about the details. They will see a billionaire family paying off a grieving husband. The media will tear us apart. To stop the bleeding, I need a distraction. Something massive. Something tragic."

Ethan’s mechanics instincts—the ability to sense when a machine was about to catastrophic fail—screamed at him. "What are you planning, Claire?"

"Julian is reckless," Claire said softly, a terrifyingly detached look in her eyes. "He’s an asset liability. Tonight, there is a gala at the hotel overlooking the Zurich lake. Julian will be driving Nia home. If an... accident occurs. If the tragic victim of the Whitmore family’s past history is involved in another terrible road mishap... the public sympathy will shift back to us. A double tragedy. The curse of the Whitmores."

Ethan lunged at her, but Vance, who had been waiting in the shadows of the hallway, stepped in, placing a heavy hand on Ethan’s chest and pushing him back into the chair.

"You're insane," Ethan gasped, realization dawning on him. "You're going to kill your own nephew? And my daughter?"

"Julian's father almost ruined this company. Julian is no better," Claire adjusted her collar, looking down at them like a queen sentencing her subjects. "And as for Nia... she’s getting too smart. She’s been looking into Swiss bank accounts, Ethan. Did you think I didn't notice? The car leaves at midnight. Make sure she’s in it."
