Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Reveal

The Trap is SprungThe smoke cleared slowly in the pouring rain. Julian was unconscious against the driver’s side airbag, alive but broken. Nia coughed, pushing her door open with the help of the iron tool. Ethan ran from his truck, pulling his daughter into a desperate, crushing embrace.
"I got you, baby girl. I got you," Ethan breathed, tears mixing with the rain on his face.
"I have the data, Dad," Nia whispered, pulling a small USB drive from the dashboard console of the wrecked sports car. "Julian’s phone was connected to the mainframe when the override happened. We have the digital fingerprint of Claire’s personal server authorizing the crash."
"Good," a voice spoke from the darkness.
Claire Whitmore stepped out from the shadow of a parked limousine further down the road, flanked by Vance and four armed security guards. She held an umbrella, looking completely unbothered by the carnage.
"An impressive attempt, Ethan," Claire applauded slowly. "You always were a good mechanic. But you don't understand how deep the roots go. Who do you think the police will believe? A disgruntled American worker who attacked a billionaire’s nephew, or me?"
"They’ll believe the law, Claire," Ethan said, stepping forward, completely unafraid of the weapons pointed at him.
"The law?" Claire laughed, a cold, empty sound. "I am the law in this jurisdiction. Vance, eliminate them. Make it look like a tragic pile-up due to the weather."
Vance raised his weapon, pointing it directly at Ethan's chest. But he didn't fire.
Instead, Vance turned the gun and pointed it directly at Claire’s head.
Claire froze, her umbrella slipping slightly. "Vance? What are you doing? Have you lost your mind?"
From the darkness behind Claire, the blue and red lights of dozens of police vehicles suddenly illuminated the mountain pass. Not the local police—these were federal agents, bearing the insignia of the International Criminal Court and the Swiss Federal Intelligence Service.
A senior official stepped forward, holding a pair of heavy steel handcuffs. "Claire Whitmore, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, attempted murder, and the systemic manipulation of automotive software resulting in multiple fatalities over the past fifteen years."
Claire staggered backward, her face turning pale. "This is impossible... Vance, I paid you millions!"
"You paid me to protect the company, Claire," Vance said coldly. "But ten years ago, when we were in that small cabin in Montana... Ethan Miller didn't just save your life. He saved mine, too. While you were unconscious, he noticed I was bleeding out from a shrapnel wound from my military days that had reopened in the storm. He stitched me up on his kitchen table while you slept. He didn't ask for money. He didn't ask who I was."
Vance looked at Ethan, a nod of profound respect passing between them. "I don't forget a debt, Claire. For ten years, I’ve been feeding the federal authorities every single piece of evidence you thought you deleted."
As the authorities dragged a screaming, hysterical Claire Whitmore into the back of a police van, the rain began to clear, revealing the first stars in the Swiss night sky.
Nia walked over to the old Chevy truck, wrapping the faded star blanket around her father’s shoulders.
"We're finally going home, Daddy," she said.

Ethan looked up at the stars, a deep, peaceful breath escaping his chest for the first time in a decade. "Yeah, baby girl. We're going home."
