Chapter 5 - The Midnight Run

The Trap on the Mountain EdgeThe rain in Zurich was torrential, turning the steep mountain roads into treacherous ribbons of black ice and mud. Inside the high-end sports coupe, Julian Whitmore slammed his hand against the steering wheel, the engine roaring as he took a sharp corner at twice the speed limit.
Nia sat in the passenger seat, her face pale but her eyes completely calm. In her lap, she clutched the old, faded star blanket she had insisted on bringing with her from America.
"Your aunt is insane, you know," Nia said quietly over the hum of the engine.
Julian laughed, a harsh, arrogant sound. "Claire? She’s a genius. She runs the world. You’re just a charity case we keep around to look good on the annual corporate social responsibility reports."
"She sent you here to die tonight, Julian," Nia remarked, her voice chillingly steady. "She rigged the brake-assist sensors on this specific model through the remote software update two hours ago. Look at your dashboard."
Julian glanced down. A tiny, amber warning light was flickering near the odometer: System Override.
His smirk vanished. He slammed his foot on the brake pedal as they approached a massive hairpin turn overlooking a thousand-foot drop into the black waters of the lake. The pedal went completely soft under his boot. The car didn't slow down. It accelerated.
"What the hell?!" Julian panicked, tearing at the steering wheel, but the electronic power steering locked up, keeping the vehicle on a direct path toward the guardrail. "The brakes aren't responding! The steering is dead!"
"I know," Nia whispered, pulling a small, metallic device out from beneath the star blanket—the pry tool her father had used ten years ago to save Claire from the snowbank. "My dad taught me that every electronic system has a manual bypass override under the steering column. But you have to know where to cut."
Suddenly, headlights flared in the rearview mirror. A heavy, armored SUV—the old Chevy truck Ethan had meticulously rebuilt and shipped to Europe over a decade under a false registration—came barreling down the mountain path.
Ethan was behind the wheel, his face set in stone. He wasn't going to let the Whitmores take another woman he loved.

With a deafening crash of metal against metal, Ethan rammed the sports car from the side, forcing it away from the edge of the cliff and slamming it into the solid rock wall of the mountain. The airbags deployed with a violent pop, filling the cabin with white smoke.
The Viral Hook: The ultimate betrayal! Claire targeted her own family to save her billions, but she forgot one thing: you can take the mechanic out of the garage, but you can't take the wrench out of his hand.
