Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past Returns

Viral Hook: THE TWIST YOU NEVER SAW COMING: THE FIRES OF 1994 ARE REIGNITED, AND MATEO BECOMES THE ULTIMATE TARGET!Three weeks passed. The glamorous life Mateo had constructed evaporated like smoke. He was forced out of the Polanco penthouse, his luxury SUV was repossessed, and his bank accounts were heavily scrutinized under corporate audit. He found himself living in a cramped, damp studio apartment in the working-class neighborhood of Doctores, staring at a ceiling that leaked every time it rained.

He had gone from wearing custom Italian suits to working an hourly graveyard shift at a logistics warehouse, his hands finally forming the same rough calluses his mother had carried for decades. Every muscle in his body ached, but the pain in his soul was far worse. He had lost everything because of his pride.

But while Mateo wallowed in his new reality, a much darker storm was brewing in the highest towers of Mexico City.

Inside the glass penthouse of Otero Industries' main rival—Valenzuela Holdings—a man named Ernesto Valenzuela sat in the shadows. For thirty years, Ernesto had watched Alejandro Otero build his untouchable empire. Ernesto was the man who had ordered the warehouse fire in 1994, believing he had wiped out Alejandro’s true love and any potential heirs, leaving Alejandro isolated and vulnerable to future corporate takeovers.

Ernesto’s informant within Otero Industries dropped a thick manila folder onto his mahogany desk. Inside were photographs of the incident at Mateo’s apartment, along with birth certificates and DNA records that Alejandro’s private investigators had recently finalized.

Ernesto opened the file, his eyes narrowing as he saw the recent photos of Doña Carmen—Elena—alive, along with the revelation that Mateo was Alejandro’s biological son.

"So... the peasant girl survived," Ernesto murmured, a sinister smile creeping across his lips. "And she gave the Otero empire a secret heir. Alejandro thinks he can hide his past, and he thinks he can punish his son in secret."

Ernesto slammed the file shut. "Alejandro’s empire is vulnerable right now. He is distracted, trying to win back the woman he lost thirty years ago. If we eliminate the heir, we break Alejandro’s spirit permanently. And this time, there will be no warehouse fire to escape from."

Meanwhile, Alejandro had been spending every evening sitting in his luxury sedan down the street from Pino Suárez Metro Station, simply watching Carmen sell her tamales. He didn't approach her with his wealth; he knew she would reject it. He was trying to figure out how to be worthy of her again.

He had no idea that his harsh punishment of Mateo had inadvertently left his newly discovered son completely unprotected. Without corporate security, without the shield of wealth, Mateo was a sitting duck for the wolves of the past.
