CHAPTER 5 — The Courtroom Betrayal That Destroyed Him Forever

Three months later...
Every major news network in the country was covering one trial.
The State vs. Ryan Carter.
The courtroom was overflowing.
Journalists packed every seat.
True-crime bloggers livestreamed from outside.
People stood in line for hours just to witness the man who had tried to murder his wealthy wife for eighteen million dollars.
Ryan entered wearing an orange jail uniform.
Gone was the confident businessman.
His expensive suits...
Luxury watches...
Perfect smile...
All gone.
He kept looking toward the courtroom doors, hoping Emily wouldn't appear.
Maybe she was still too injured.
Maybe she was too afraid.
Maybe she had decided not to testify.
Then...
The doors opened.
Every person in the courtroom stood.
Emily walked inside.
Slowly.
Confidently.
She still carried a faint scar across her forehead, but otherwise she looked stronger than ever.
Ryan's face turned pale.
"No..." he whispered.
Emily never looked at him.
She calmly took her seat beside the prosecution.
The judge called the first witness.
One of the three hired killers.
The tallest one.
His hands trembled as he took the oath.
The prosecutor asked only one question.
"Who hired you to kill Emily Carter?"
The courtroom fell silent.
The killer slowly raised his hand.
And pointed directly at Ryan.
"He did."
A wave of gasps swept through the room.
Ryan shot to his feet.
"He's lying!"
"I've never seen this man before!"
The prosecutor smiled.
"Really?"
He nodded toward the evidence screen.
A video began playing.
Ryan's face appeared clearly.
The footage came from a gas station security camera two days before the attack.
There was Ryan...
Handing a black duffel bag to the same three men.
The timestamp was unmistakable.
The courtroom erupted.
Ryan stared at the screen in horror.
"That's... that's fake!"
But the prosecutor wasn't finished.
Next came bank records.
Encrypted messages recovered from Ryan's deleted phone.
GPS data placing him near the mountain.
Insurance documents.
Forged signatures.
The handwritten note:
"Mountain accident looks natural."
Each new piece of evidence buried him deeper.
Then...
Emily stood.
"I'd like permission to address the court."
The judge nodded.
She turned toward Ryan.
"I loved you."
"I trusted you with everything I owned."
"My business."
"My future."
"My life."
She paused, fighting back tears.
"But do you know what hurt the most?"
"It wasn't the fall."
"It wasn't the broken bones."
"It was hearing the words..."
"Greetings from your husband."
Ryan lowered his head.
For the first time...
He cried.
Not because he regretted what he'd done.
Because he knew he had lost.
After six hours of deliberation...
The jury returned.
"Guilty..."
On every count.
Attempted murder.
Conspiracy to commit murder.
Insurance fraud.
Forgery.
Criminal conspiracy.
The judge looked directly at Ryan.
"For your greed and complete disregard for human life..."
"I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole."
The gavel struck.
Ryan collapsed into his chair.
His empire...
His freedom...
His future...
Were gone.
Everyone believed the story was over.

But Emily had one last secret.
One that would shock even the detectives.
