CHAPTER 1 — The Child Who Was “Already Dead”… Until Someone Discovered the Truth

“That boy is no longer living, Víctor… he’s only breathing.”
The words fell into the luxurious office like a cold blade.
Natalia didn’t whisper them.
She didn’t hesitate.
She said them with the same calm voice someone would use to discuss a broken piece of furniture that no longer had any value.
Víctor Salgado froze.
For ten seconds, the most feared businessman in Mexico couldn’t say a single word.
Because the person Natalia was talking about wasn’t a stranger.
It was his son.
His only son.
Leonardo Salgado.
A seven-year-old child who had once filled the entire mansion with laughter.
A child who used to run through the halls barefoot, chase birds in the garden, and fall asleep on his mother’s shoulder while asking impossible questions about the stars.
But fourteen months ago, everything changed.
A terrible car accident on a mountain road took away Clara, Leonardo’s mother, and left Leo trapped inside a body that no longer obeyed him.
The doctors called it a miracle that he survived.
But they also told Víctor something that destroyed him.
“Your son may never walk again.”
The accident damaged his spine.
His legs were permanently paralyzed.
And after losing his mother, Leo stopped speaking.
Not one word.
Not “Dad.”
Not “I’m scared.”
Not even a cry.
The boy who once talked nonstop became a silent child staring at the ceiling every day.
And Víctor Salgado, a man who could make powerful people tremble with one phone call, suddenly became powerless.
Money could buy the best doctors.
Money could hire the greatest specialists.
Money could build a hospital inside his own mansion.
But money could not bring his son back.
Or so he thought.
For months, Víctor watched his son disappear little by little.
The strange thing was…
Leo wasn’t getting weaker because of his injuries.
At least, that’s what the doctors believed.
Every medical test came back confusing.
His body was healing.
His brain showed activity.
His muscles responded better than expected.
Yet every week, Leo became quieter.
Paler.
More exhausted.
Almost like someone was slowly turning off the light inside him.
That was when Víctor became suspicious.
He had survived decades in the dangerous world of business because he trusted his instincts.
And his instincts were screaming one thing:
Someone inside his house was hurting his son.
So he did something nobody knew about.
He installed hidden cameras.
Tiny cameras.
Almost invisible.
Inside Leo’s bedroom.
In the hallway.
Near the dining room.
Even inside the private kitchen where his son’s meals were prepared.
Nobody knew.
Not his fiancée Natalia.
Not his closest friend Diego.
Not even the new caregiver he had hired three weeks earlier.
Nora Sandoval.
A 26-year-old woman with a complicated past.
The first time Víctor met Nora, he almost rejected her.
Her file wasn’t clean.
A previous employer had accused her of stealing medication.
The case was never proven.
But Víctor hated uncertainty.
Especially when it involved his son.
“You understand this is not an ordinary job,” he told her coldly.
Nora stood in front of him inside the mansion’s enormous living room.
She looked nervous.
But she didn’t look afraid.
“You will take care of Leonardo,” Víctor continued.
“You will follow every instruction.”
“You will not bring strangers into this house.”
“And you will never close his bedroom door.”
Most people lowered their eyes when Víctor spoke.
Nora didn’t.
Instead, she looked toward the hallway where Leo’s room was located.
Then she said something that surprised him.
“I will care for your son.”
“But I will never treat him like he is already dead.”
For some reason…
That sentence stayed in Víctor’s mind.
For two weeks, he watched her through the cameras.
He expected to discover something terrible.
Maybe she was pretending.
Maybe she wanted money.
Maybe she was another person trying to exploit his family.
But instead…
He saw something he hadn’t seen in months.
Life.
Nora entered Leo’s room every morning with a smile.
“Good morning, champion.”
She opened the curtains.
She brushed his hair.
She told him ridiculous stories about her childhood.
She played old songs.
She even argued with him jokingly.
“Okay, Leo. I know you’re ignoring me, but I’m still going to tell you my terrible jokes.”
The boy never responded.
But one day…
Something happened.
A tiny movement.
Almost impossible to notice.
Nora was talking about a dog she had as a child when Leo’s eyes slowly moved toward her.
Víctor watched the camera footage several times.
Again.
And again.
His son had reacted.
For the first time in fourteen months.
But there was one person who always changed when Nora was around.
Natalia.
Víctor’s future wife.
The woman who had comforted him after Clara’s death.
The woman who convinced him that life had to continue.
At least…
That was what Víctor believed.
Natalia was beautiful, elegant, and perfect in public.
Everyone admired her.
But inside the house…
Something was different.
Every time she entered Leo’s room, Nora became tense.
She watched Natalia carefully.
Especially when she brought food.
One evening, Víctor reviewed the camera recordings.
He noticed something strange.
Natalia never touched Leo’s food.
She never tasted it.
She never allowed anyone else to prepare it.
And every time she fed him…
Nora looked terrified.
Then came the rainy afternoon that changed everything.
The mansion was silent.
Thunder shook the windows.
Leo was lying in bed while Nora read him a story.
Suddenly, Natalia walked in carrying a bowl.
“Pumpkin soup,” she said with a smile.
“For my little angel.”
But Nora noticed something.
The smile didn’t reach Natalia’s eyes.
“Make sure he finishes everything,” Natalia ordered.
Then she left.
The moment the door closed…
Nora’s expression changed.
She looked at Leo.
Then at the bowl.
“Not again…”
Víctor watched from his office screen.
His heart started beating faster.
What was she doing?
Nora locked the door.
Víctor immediately stood up.
Nobody locked doors in his house.
Nobody.
He grabbed his phone.
He was seconds away from calling security.
Then he saw it.
Nora reached inside her uniform pocket.
She pulled out a syringe.
Víctor’s blood turned cold.
“Call security,” he whispered.
But before he could press the button…
Nora did something unexpected.
She didn’t inject Leo.
She didn’t touch his body.
She carefully placed the syringe into the soup.
She extracted a small sample.
Then she mixed it with a strange chemical solution inside a tiny glass container.
Víctor watched the screen without blinking.
Five seconds passed.
Ten seconds.
Then…
The liquid turned black.
Nora’s face lost all color.
“No…”
Her voice trembled.
“No, no, no…”
She threw the soup into the trash.
Then she rushed to Leo’s side.
She grabbed his hand.
And for the first time…
Leo reacted.
His fingers moved.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Nora started crying.
“I knew it, champion…”
“I knew they were doing this to you.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t find proof sooner.”
Víctor stopped breathing.
Because he understood something.
Nora wasn’t trying to hurt his son.
She was trying to save him.
The office door suddenly opened.
Diego, Víctor’s most loyal friend for fifteen years, entered.
“You need to see something,” Diego said.
Víctor turned around.
“What?”
Diego looked nervous.
Then he placed a small envelope on the desk.
“We found this hidden in Clara’s old belongings.”
Víctor opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Clara…
Standing next to Natalia.
But the date on the back made Víctor’s hands shake.
It was taken…
three years before Víctor ever met Natalia.
Then he saw the second thing inside the envelope.
A handwritten note from his late wife.
Only six words.
Six words that changed everything:
“Víctor, don’t trust the woman you love.”
At that exact moment…
The hidden camera inside Leo’s room went black.
Someone had discovered the surveillance system.
And the last image Víctor saw before the screen disappeared…
Was Natalia standing outside the bedroom door.
Smiling.
Holding the same syringe Nora had just found.
May you like
