CHAPTER 4 — The Man Who Stood Beside Him for 15 Years Was the Enemy Inside His Home

The sound of the gun being loaded echoed through the abandoned warehouse.
Click.
A small sound.
But to Víctor Salgado…
It sounded louder than an explosion.
Because the man holding the weapon wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t one of his enemies.
It wasn’t someone trying to destroy his empire.
It was the person he trusted more than anyone.
Diego Herrera.
His best friend.
His protector.
The man who had stood beside him for fifteen years.
The man who knew every secret.
Every business move.
Every weakness.
Every wound.
Víctor stared at him in disbelief.
“Diego…”
His voice was barely a whisper.
“What are you doing?”
Diego didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at Clara.
Then at Leo.
Then back at Víctor.
And for the first time…
Víctor saw something he had never seen before.
Not loyalty.
Not friendship.
Hatred.
“Do you know what your problem has always been, Víctor?”
Diego stepped forward.
“You thought money could fix everything.”
“You thought if you built a bigger house, hired better doctors, and surrounded yourself with guards…”
“No one could hurt your family.”
He smiled bitterly.
“But you never realized the danger was already sitting at your table.”
Víctor clenched his fists.
“You were behind this?”
Diego laughed.
“Behind what?”
“The accident?”
“The poisoning?”
“The cameras?”
He tilted his head.
“You’re finally asking the right questions.”
Leo began trembling.
Clara immediately moved closer to her son.
“It’s okay, cariño.”
But Diego pointed the gun toward them.
“Don’t move.”
Víctor’s eyes became cold.
“Put the weapon down.”
For years, people feared Víctor Salgado.
His name alone could stop negotiations.
His presence could silence a room.
But Diego didn’t move.
Because Diego knew something no one else knew.
Víctor wasn’t afraid of losing money.
He wasn’t afraid of losing power.
He was afraid of losing his son.
And that was exactly why Diego had chosen him.
“Tell me why,” Víctor demanded.
“Why would you do this?”
Diego looked away.
For a moment…
Something almost like sadness crossed his face.
“Because Clara found out.”
Víctor froze.
“Found out what?”
Diego smiled.
“The truth about your company.”
The warehouse became silent.
Clara looked at Víctor.
“You never told him?”
Víctor looked confused.
“What are you talking about?”
Diego laughed.
“Of course you didn’t.”
“You always hide the ugly parts.”
Fifteen years earlier…
Before Víctor became the powerful businessman everyone feared…
Before the luxury mansion.
Before the millions.
Before the reputation…
There was another story.
A story nobody knew.
Víctor and Diego had started with nothing.
Two young men trying to survive.
They built their first company together.
They made sacrifices.
They took risks.
They promised each other:
“No matter what happens, we will never betray one another.”
But promises become fragile when money appears.
And power changes people.
Years later, Víctor became the face of the empire.
The name everyone recognized.
The person everyone praised.
While Diego stayed in the shadows.
The forgotten partner.
The man who handled problems.
The man who cleaned up mistakes.
The man nobody thanked.
And slowly…
Resentment grew.
“You took everything from me,” Diego said.
Víctor stared at him.
“I gave you everything.”
“No.”
Diego shook his head.
“You gave me a position.”
“A salary.”
“A place behind you.”
“But never beside you.”
His voice became louder.
“Everyone called you a genius.”
“Everyone admired you.”
“Everyone feared you.”
“And me?”
He laughed.
“I was just the man carrying your secrets.”
Clara interrupted.
“You caused the accident because I discovered your illegal deals.”
Diego’s expression changed.
For the first time…
Fear appeared.
“You should have stayed quiet.”
Clara looked at him with disgust.
“You tried to kill me.”
“I survived.”
“But you didn’t know Leonardo was in the car.”
Víctor looked at Clara.
His heart broke.
“Leo saw everything…”
Clara nodded.
“That’s why Diego needed him silent.”
“He couldn’t kill him.”
“Because if something happened to your son, you would destroy the world looking for the person responsible.”
“So he created a different plan.”
Víctor looked toward Leo.
“He kept him alive…”
“But made him unable to speak.”
Clara nodded.
Suddenly…
A sound came from behind them.
A car engine.
Diego smiled.
“Looks like we have company.”
Víctor turned.
Several black vehicles stopped outside the warehouse.
Men stepped out.
But they weren’t Diego’s men.
They wore police uniforms.
And leading them…
Was Dr. Esteban Rojas.
The same doctor who treated Leo after the accident.
The same doctor whose name appeared in Natalia’s medical records.
Víctor stared.
“You?”
The doctor smiled.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Salgado…”
“You trusted the wrong people.”
Dr. Rojas walked into the warehouse.
“Natalia was only a small part of the plan.”
Víctor’s eyes narrowed.
“What plan?”
The doctor looked at Leo.
“A plan that started long before the accident.”
Clara grabbed Leo’s hand.
“No…”
The doctor smiled.
“Yes.”
“Your son was never the target.”
Everyone became silent.
Víctor stepped forward.
“Then who was?”
Dr. Rojas looked directly at him.
“You.”
The words hit harder than any bullet.
Víctor felt his heart stop.
“Me?”
The doctor nodded.
“For years, your enemies tried to destroy your company.”
“They failed.”
“They tried to destroy your reputation.”
“They failed.”
“So they chose something much easier.”
“Destroy the man behind everything.”
Diego looked at Víctor.
“Make you weak.”
“Make you emotional.”
“Make you lose control.”
“Make you willing to give up your empire.”
Then Nora suddenly appeared at the warehouse entrance.
Everyone turned.
She was holding a small black bag.
“I knew it.”
Víctor looked surprised.
“Nora?”
She walked forward slowly.
“I followed the medication records.”
“The poison wasn’t only in Leo’s food.”
“It was in his treatment.”
She opened the bag.
Inside were medical files.
And one photograph.
A photograph that made everyone freeze.
It showed Diego…
Natalia…
And Dr. Rojas…
Together.
But the date on the picture was impossible.
Because it was taken…
One week before Clara’s accident.
Víctor looked at Diego.
The betrayal finally became real.
But then Nora said something that made everyone turn pale.
“There’s something else.”
She looked at Leo.
“Leonardo didn’t lose his ability to speak because of the accident.”
A pause.
“He was poisoned before it happened.”
Víctor’s eyes widened.
“Before?”
Nora nodded.
“Yes.”
“The accident was only the final step.”
Suddenly, Leo’s hand moved.
Everyone looked down.
The boy slowly lifted his finger.
And pointed at someone.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone nobody had suspected.
Víctor followed his son’s finger.
And his face turned completely white.
Because Leo wasn’t pointing at Diego.
He wasn’t pointing at Natalia.
He wasn’t pointing at the doctor.
He was pointing at…
Clara.
May you like
