CHAPTER 3 — The Dead Woman’s Message Revealed the Secret Everyone Had Been Hiding

“You should have listened when I warned you.”
Those seven words destroyed Víctor Salgado’s reality.
He stood in the middle of his son’s empty bedroom, holding the piece of paper with trembling hands.
The handwriting…
The signature…
Everything belonged to Clara.
His wife.
Leonardo’s mother.
The woman who had been declared dead fourteen months ago.
“This is impossible…” Víctor whispered.
Diego looked at the paper carefully.
“Boss… there are only two possibilities.”
Víctor turned toward him.
“What are they?”
Diego swallowed.
“Someone is trying to make you believe Clara is alive…”
A pause.
“Or…”
He looked toward the dark hallway.
“Clara never died.”
The mansion that night became a battlefield.
Security guards searched every corner.
The gates were locked.
The cameras were reviewed.
The police were called.
But there was no trace of Leo.
No broken window.
No footprints.
No forced entry.
It was as if someone inside the house had opened the door…
And walked away with him.
Víctor couldn’t accept it.
Because one thought kept destroying him:
His son had spent fourteen months trapped and suffering while he was protecting him from the wrong people.
He had watched strangers.
He had investigated nurses.
He had suspected everyone…
Except the woman sleeping beside him every night.
Natalia.
When Víctor confronted her, she was sitting calmly in the living room.
Almost too calmly.
She held a cup of coffee in her hands.
“You’re upset,” she said softly.
“Of course I’m upset.”
“My son disappeared from my house.”
Natalia lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
But there was no fear.
No sadness.
No panic.
And that was when Víctor noticed something.
A mother figure should have been terrified.
But Natalia looked like someone waiting for a plan to work.
“Where is Leonardo?”
Natalia looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
“Then why aren’t you afraid?”
A small smile appeared on her lips.
“Víctor…”
“You’ve always been emotional when it comes to him.”
“Maybe that’s your weakness.”
The room went silent.
Because those words didn’t sound like comfort.
They sounded like a confession.
Meanwhile, Nora was still in Leo’s room.
She refused to leave.
She sat beside the empty bed, staring at the place where the boy had spent months trapped.
Then she noticed something.
A tiny scratch underneath the bed.
She moved closer.
There was something hidden behind the wooden panel.
A small recording device.
Her heart stopped.
Because Leo couldn’t speak…
But he had found a way to communicate.
She pressed the button.
At first, there was only silence.
Then…
A child’s breathing.
Slow.
Weak.
Scared.
And then a voice.
A tiny whisper.
Almost impossible to hear.
“Dad…”
Nora covered her mouth.
Leo had spoken.
After fourteen months…
Leo had spoken.
But the recording continued.
“Dad…”
“Don’t trust…”
A noise interrupted him.
Someone entered the room.
A woman’s voice appeared.
Natalia.
“Leonardo…”
“You’re making things difficult.”
The recording ended.
Nora froze.
Because she finally understood.
Leo wasn’t just being poisoned.
He was being silenced.
At the same time, Víctor received an unknown phone call.
He answered immediately.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Do you want your son back?”
Víctor tightened his grip on the phone.
“Who are you?”
A soft laugh.
“You spent years building an empire, Víctor.”
“You bought companies.”
“You defeated enemies.”
“You made powerful people disappear.”
“But you failed to protect the one person who needed you most.”
Víctor’s eyes turned cold.
“Where is my son?”
The voice ignored the question.
“Come alone.”
“Old Santa María warehouse.”
“Midnight.”
“If you bring anyone…”
“You will never see Leonardo again.”
The call ended.
Víctor arrived at the abandoned warehouse exactly at midnight.
No guards.
No weapons.
Only him.
The rain poured heavily.
The same kind of rain from the night Clara died.
Inside the warehouse, a single light was hanging from the ceiling.
And beneath it…
Was Leo.
Alive.
Sitting in a wheelchair.
But not alone.
A woman stood behind him.
A woman wearing a dark coat.
Víctor stopped walking.
His entire body froze.
Because even after fourteen months…
He recognized her immediately.
The eyes.
The face.
The voice.
“Víctor…”
The woman whispered.
“I’m sorry.”
The world stopped.
Because the impossible was standing in front of him.
Clara.
His dead wife.
Alive.
Víctor couldn’t move.
“No…”
His voice broke.
“You died.”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“I wanted you to believe that.”
“Why?”
“Because if you knew I survived…”
“They would have killed Leonardo.”
Víctor looked at Leo.
The boy stared at his mother.
And for the first time in fourteen months…
He smiled.
A real smile.
A child’s smile.
Víctor felt his knees weaken.
His son remembered her.
He knew her.
“Clara…”
“What happened?”
She looked toward the warehouse entrance.
Fear appeared on her face.
“The accident wasn’t an accident.”
Víctor’s breathing stopped.
“Who did it?”
Clara looked directly at him.
And said the name he least expected.
“Natalia.”
Víctor felt rage explode inside him.
“No.”
“She loved me.”
Clara shook her head.
“No, Víctor.”
“She loved what you had.”
“Your money.”
“Your power.”
“Your name.”
Then Clara revealed something even worse.
“Natalia was never trying to kill Leonardo.”
Víctor frowned.
“Then what was she trying to do?”
Clara looked at Leo.
“She wanted him alive.”
“But unable to speak.”
“Unable to reveal what he saw that night.”
Víctor felt a chill.
“What did Leo see?”
Clara took a deep breath.
Then she answered:
“The person who caused the accident…”
“Was not Natalia.”
A pause.
“It was someone you trust more than anyone.”
Before Víctor could ask who…
The warehouse doors suddenly opened.
Footsteps echoed through the darkness.
A familiar voice spoke.
“You always were terrible at keeping secrets, Clara.”
Víctor turned around slowly.
And his blood ran cold.
Because standing at the entrance…
Was Diego.
His best friend.
His right-hand man for fifteen years.
Holding a gun.
May you like
