CHAPTER 2 — The Woman Behind the Smile Had Been Planning This for Years

“Víctor… if you are watching this recording, it means I was right.”
The voice came from the old audio file hidden inside the envelope.
It was Clara.
His wife.
The woman he had buried fourteen months ago.
The woman whose death he had spent every night blaming himself for.
Víctor stood frozen in his office, staring at the small device in his hand.
For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.
Because hearing Clara’s voice again was impossible.
Painful.
But what she said next made his blood run cold.
“Someone inside this house wants Leonardo gone.”
The room suddenly felt smaller.
The walls felt like they were closing in.
Víctor replayed the message.
Again.
And again.
Every word sounded like a warning from the past.
But there was something worse.
A question he couldn’t ignore.
How long had Clara known?
And why didn’t she tell him?
Fourteen months earlier…
The night of the accident returned to Víctor’s mind.
The rain.
The mountain road.
The broken car.
The phone call that destroyed his world.
“Mr. Salgado… there was an accident.”
He remembered running into the hospital.
He remembered seeing doctors fighting to save his son.
He remembered hearing:
“Your wife didn’t make it.”
But there was something nobody had explained.
The car accident was blamed on a mechanical failure.
The brakes supposedly stopped working.
A tragic accident.
That was the official story.
But now…
Víctor wasn’t sure anymore.
Back in the mansion, Nora sat beside Leo’s bed.
She held his hand tightly.
The child looked terrified.
Not because of the medicine.
Not because of the cameras.
But because he understood something.
Someone was trying to hurt him.
And he had been trapped inside his own body, unable to tell anyone.
Nora leaned closer.
“Leo…”
“Can you hear me?”
The boy’s eyes moved.
A tear slowly rolled down his cheek.
Nora covered her mouth.
Because after weeks of caring for him…
She finally understood.
He had been awake.
The entire time.
He could hear everything.
Every conversation.
Every cruel word.
Every secret.
But he couldn’t speak.
He couldn’t move.
He was a prisoner inside himself.
Víctor entered the room slowly.
Nora immediately stood up.
“I can explain.”
But Víctor raised his hand.
“No.”
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Broken.
“I owe you an apology.”
Nora looked surprised.
The most powerful man in the house was admitting he had been wrong.
Víctor looked at Leo.
“My son knew…”
His voice cracked.
“My son was trying to tell us.”
Nora nodded.
“He tried.”
“He moved his eyes whenever Natalia came close.”
“He became anxious whenever she touched his food.”
“He wasn’t silent because he gave up.”
“He was silent because he was trapped.”
Those words hit Víctor harder than any weapon ever could.
Suddenly…
The bedroom door opened.
Natalia appeared.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect dress.
Perfect smile.
“What is happening here?”
Nobody answered.
Her eyes moved from Víctor…
To Nora…
Then to the empty soup bowl.
For the first time…
Her confidence disappeared.
Only for a second.
But Víctor noticed.
“You prepared his food?” he asked.
Natalia smiled.
“Of course.”
“I’m his future stepmother.”
Víctor walked closer.
“Then why did the soup contain a substance that could damage his nervous system?”
Silence.
The entire room froze.
Natalia stared at him.
Then she laughed.
A soft, nervous laugh.
“Víctor…”
“Are you seriously accusing me because of something this girl said?”
She pointed at Nora.
“The woman with the criminal record?”
Nora’s face changed.
Because Natalia knew exactly where to attack.
“You hired a woman accused of stealing medication,” Natalia continued.
“And now you believe her over me?”
Víctor looked at Nora.
Then back at Natalia.
For years, he had trusted Natalia.
But trust was not proof.
And now…
He needed proof.
That night, Víctor secretly ordered Diego to investigate everything.
Natalia’s past.
Her family.
Her finances.
Every connection.
Three hours later, Diego returned.
And his face said everything.
“You need to see this.”
He placed a folder on the table.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Records.
Víctor opened the first page.
And his hands began shaking.
Natalia wasn’t just connected to Leo.
She was connected to Clara.
Before marrying Víctor…
Natalia had worked as an assistant for Clara’s private charity foundation.
They knew each other.
They weren’t strangers.
But the last document was the one that destroyed Víctor.
A hospital report.
A medical appointment.
Sixteen months ago.
One month before Clara’s accident.
The patient name:
Natalia Vargas.
The doctor:
Dr. Esteban Rojas.
The same doctor who signed Leonardo’s first medical report after the accident.
Víctor stared at the papers.
“Find this doctor.”
Diego nodded.
But before he could leave…
The mansion lights suddenly went out.
The entire house went dark.
Then…
A scream.
From Leo’s room.
Víctor ran.
He pushed the door open.
Nora was on the floor.
The window was open.
And Leo…
Leo was missing.
For three seconds, Víctor couldn’t understand what he was seeing.
Then panic exploded through him.
“Where is my son?”
Nora looked up with tears in her eyes.
“Someone came in…”
“They took him.”
Víctor grabbed the blanket.
His hands trembled.
“No…”
“No, no…”
Then something caught his attention.
On Leo’s bed was a small piece of paper.
A message written in black ink.
Víctor picked it up.
Only one sentence.
“You should have listened when I warned you.”
Below the sentence was a signature.
A signature that made Víctor’s entire body go cold.
Because it belonged to the one person who should never have been able to write it.
Clara Salgado.
