Chapter 1 - The Trap Is Sprung

The copper taste of blood filled my mouth, but the pain in my chest was nothing compared to the cold clarity that washed over me. Vanessa stood over me, her chest heaving with a manic sort of pride, her diamond anklet catching the afternoon sun. Daniel stood frozen, a coward trapped in a gilded cage of his own making.
“Why are you smiling, you old freak?” Vanessa hissed, her perfect eyebrows drawing together. “Get up and clean this mess before I have the security guards throw you into the street in your nightgown.”
I didn't answer. I slowly pushed myself up from the blood-stained tile, ignoring the agonizing bite of the glass shards embedded in my knees. I reached into the pocket of my oversized, faded cardigan—the one Vanessa had mocked for months—and pulled out my cracked phone.
The screen was glowing. The recording timer read: 01:14:22.
“What is that?” Vanessa’s voice dropped an octave, the first tremor of unease breaking through her icy facade. “Daniel, take her phone. Now!”
Daniel took a step toward me, his face pale. “Mom, don’t do this. Just delete whatever that is. Vanessa’s family owns the DA’s office in this county. You can’t win against them.”
“I’m not trying to win against them, Daniel,” I said, my voice steady, devoid of the country warmth they thought made me weak. “Because the Bellamys don’t own anything anymore.”
I reached back into my pocket and pulled out a thick, legal envelope, sealed with a red wax stamp. I threw it at Vanessa’s feet. It landed right in the puddle of water and blood.
“Open it,” I whispered.
Vanessa laughed, though it sounded forced. “More sob stories? A lawsuit? My lawyers will have you arrested for extortion before sunset.” Still, curiosity got the better of her. She snatched the envelope, tearing it open with her manicured nails.
As her eyes scanned the top page, the color drained from her face so fast I thought she might faint. The arrogant smirk she had worn for three months didn’t just fade—it vanished completely.
“This… this is impossible,” she stammered, her hands beginning to shake. “This is a federal asset freeze. The Bellamy Trust… the offshore accounts… the shipping logistics… everything is locked. Who authorized this? Who the hell do you think you are?”
Right on cue, the heavy glass doors of the greenhouse shattered inward.
A dozen federal agents in tactical gear poured into the room, rifles raised. Leading them was a man in a sharp grey suit, holding a badge.
“FBI! Nobody move!” the lead agent shouted. He marched straight past Vanessa, straight past a trembling Daniel, and stopped right in front of me. He looked at my bleeding chin, my torn knees, and his jaw tightened in fury.
“Director Montgomery,” the agent said, bowing his head slightly to me. “The warrant has been executed. The Bellamy empire has fallen. Are you alright, ma’am?”
May you like
I wiped the blood from my chin with the back of my hand and looked at my horrified daughter-in-law.
“I’m doing just fine, Agent Vance,” I smiled, my eyes locking onto Vanessa’s terrified gaze. “Begin the arrests.”
