Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Two operatives dragged Daniel into the room. He was a mess—his clothes torn, tears streaming down his face. When he saw me standing up, healthy and dominant, he fell to his knees.

“Mom! Mom, please listen to me!” Daniel begged. “Arthur threatened to kill you! He told me if I didn’t help him transfer the money, he would have Vanessa suffocate you in your sleep! I did it to save you!”

I looked down at my only son. The boy I had protected from his abusive father, the boy I had worked three jobs to put through college.

“You’re lying, Daniel,” I said softly. “I reviewed the audio logs from the hidden microphones in your bedroom. Three weeks ago, you told Vanessa, ‘Once the old hag dies, we’ll buy the villa in Monaco and never have to look at her ugly country face again.’ Do you deny saying that?”

Daniel’s jaw dropped. He looked around the room, realizing there was no escape, no lie left to tell.

His face transformed. The pathetic, crying boy vanished, replaced by a sneer of pure hatred. “Yeah? So what? You spent your whole life hoarding power and secrets while we lived like peasants on that stupid farm! You could have made us rich decades ago! You owed me that money!”

“Money earned on the blood of innocent people?” I asked.

“I don’t care about people!” Daniel screamed. “I wanted the life Vanessa had! And you took it from me!”

The door opened again, and Vanessa was pushed into the room by Agent Vance. Her hair was disheveled, her makeup smeared. When she saw Arthur on the floor and Daniel screaming, she realized the truth.

“You failed?” Vanessa shrieked at her father. “You said this old bitch was nothing!”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Arthur barked from the floor.

“No, you shut up!” Vanessa yelled back, turning her venomous gaze to Daniel. “And you! You pathetic loser! I only married you because your mother was the legendary Eleanor Montgomery! My father needed her clearance, and you were the stupid, desperate key to getting it! I never loved you! You’re just a broke country boy, just like your mother!”

Daniel looked like he had been stabbed. “Vanessa… no… we were partners…”

“Partners?” Vanessa laughed hysterically. “I kicked your mother in the chest right in front of you, and you did nothing! You’re a coward, Daniel. A penniless, pathetic coward.”

I watched them tear each other apart, feeling a strange sense of closure. The poison in my family was finally out in the open.

“Agent Vance,” I said, turning away from the pathetic spectacle. “Take them all to the federal holding facility. No bail. No visitors.”
