Chapter 2 - The Mask Falls

“Director?” Daniel choked out the word, his eyes darting between me and the federal agents who were already pinning Vanessa’s arms behind her back. “Mom… what is he talking about? You’re a retired farmer from Kentucky.”

“Oh, Daniel,” I sighed, feeling a profound sadness for the boy I had raised, who had traded his soul for a wealthy girl's allowance. “A farm is the perfect place to hide when you spend thirty years running the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network for the United States government.”

Vanessa was screaming now, struggling against the handcuffs. “Get your filthy hands off me! Do you know who my father is? He’ll have all your badges! Daniel, do something! Call the lawyers!”

“Your father is currently being detained at JFK airport, Vanessa,” Agent Vance said calmly, clicking the handcuffs into place. “The Bellamy Trust was never old money. It was the largest money-laundering funnel for Eastern European syndicates in North America. And your loving husband just handed us the missing puzzle piece.”

Daniel stumbled backward, hitting the marble table. “I… I didn’t do anything! I didn’t know!”

“You knew enough to shut your mouth while she tortured your mother,” I said coldly.

Three months ago, when I suffered my heart attack, it wasn’t just stress. I had discovered that Vanessa had deliberately targeted Daniel, marrying him solely because his security clearance at his logistics firm allowed her family to bypass federal shipping inspections. When I confronted her privately in the hospital, she threatened to ruin Daniel’s life. So, I played the victim. I let her move me into this house. I let her take my cards. I let her think she had completely broken me.

Because a cornered rat is dangerous, but a rat that thinks it has won becomes sloppy.

Vanessa looked at me, her eyes wild with malice. “You think you’ve won, you old bitch? You’re a broken-down hag with a failing heart. Even if my family goes down, I’ll make sure you don't live to see the trial.”

“We’ll see about that,” I said. “Agent Vance, take her away. And arrest my son as an accessory to corporate fraud and elder abuse.”

Daniel dropped to his knees, the very same glass shards cutting into his expensive trousers. “Mom, please! I’m your son! I did it for us! I wanted us to be rich!”

“You did it for yourself, Daniel,” I said, turning my back on him as the agents dragged them both out of the greenhouse.

But as the estate fell silent, a sharp, sudden pain flared in my chest. My vision blurred. The bypass stitches felt like fire. I collapsed into Agent Vance’s arms, the world spinning into darkness.
