Chapter 4 - The Fortress of Glass

Headline: INSIDE THE LION'S DEN: THE HIDDEN TRUTH BEHIND THE MOB BOSS'S SECURE MANSION!

The Moretti estate was less of a home and more of a fortress disguised as architectural art. Situated high on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, the massive structure of black steel and reinforced glass stood isolated from the rest of the world, surrounded by heavy iron gates and manned by private security teams patrolling with guard dogs.

Clara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the guest suite, her hands wrapped tightly around a mug of hot tea. The events of the previous night felt like a fever dream. Stefano had pulled her out of that hospital room amidst a hail of gunfire, his security detail executing a flawless counter-ambush that left two Bertoli hitmen dead in the corridor. They had sped away in an armored SUV, leaving the chaos behind.

Now, she was trapped in luxury.

A soft knock sounded at the door. Stefano entered, having changed into a fresh charcoal suit. The tense, violent aura he carried in the hospital was gone, replaced once again by his calm demeanor.

"You aren't resting," he noted, walking over to stand a respectful distance away from her.

"It’s hard to sleep when you’re waiting for the walls to explode," Clara replied without turning around. "How long do you intend to keep me here, Mr. Moretti?"

"Until the threat is neutralized. Don Bertoli has mobilized his entire syndicate. He feels publicly humiliated because of what happened to his nephew. He has put a half-million-dollar bounty on your head, Clara. To the underworld, you are the symbol of his weakness. If he kills you, he proves he can strike at anyone under my protection."

Clara turned around, setting her tea down with a sharp click. "I don't understand you. Why do you care? You could have just given me to them. You could have thrown me to the wolves to save your own people the trouble of a war."

Stefano walked to a small bar in the corner, pouring himself two fingers of scotch. He didn't drink it immediately. He swirled the amber liquid, staring into the glass as if looking at ghosts.

"Ten years ago," Stefano began, his voice quiet, "my younger sister, Sofia, worked a summer job at a bakery downtown. A rival family wanted to send a message to my father. They didn't attack our compounds. They didn't attack our soldiers. They walked into that bakery and shot her three times in the chest while she was wiping down the counters."

Clara gasped softly, her anger momentarily faltering.

"My father did nothing," Stefano continued, his jaw tightening, a rare flash of raw fury illuminating his eyes. "He said it was the cost of business. He said a war would cost too much money and too many lives. He let her death go unavenged for the sake of profit." Stefano looked directly into Clara's eyes. "When I took over this family, I swore an oath. Never again. If a civilian is harmed under my watch, I burn the world down until the person responsible is dust. You are not a pawn, Clara. You are a line in the sand."

For the first time, Clara saw the man behind the myth. He wasn't just fighting for territory or pride; he was fighting a war against his own past, trying to redeem a sister he couldn't save by protecting a stranger who reminded him of her.

"I’m sorry about your sister," Clara said softly.

"Do not be sorry. Be careful," Stefano said, taking a sip of his drink. "Bertoli is desperate. And a desperate man is unpredictable. My security is tight, but—"

Suddenly, the lights in the entire mansion flickered and died, plunging the room into absolute darkness. Simultaneously, the loud, rhythmic thudding of a heavy helicopter engine began to echo from the skies directly above the estate.

The emergency red backup lights kicked on, casting a bloody glow across the room. Stefano dropped his glass, his gun already drawn before the shards hit the floor.

"They bypassed the perimeter," Stefano said, his voice dropping into a lethal, calm register. "They didn't come by land. They’re coming from the roof. Clara, get into the closet and lock the reinforced door. Do not come out until you hear my voice."

But as Stefano turned to sprint toward the hallway, a heavy explosion rocked the upper floor of the mansion, sending structural beams crashing down and sealing the exit to the room in a wall of fire and debris. They were trapped inside the glass suite, and the sound of heavy boots was already approaching the door.
