Chapter 6 - The Anatomy of a Trap

Headline: THE WAITRESS STRIKES BACK! THE SHOCKING TRUTH CLARA BENSON HID FROM THE UNDERWORLD!

The heavy ceramic lid struck Marco squarely across the jaw with a sickening crunch. The surprise of the attack, combined with the sheer force, sent the seasoned mobster stumbling backward, his weapon firing wildly into the ceiling as he lost his balance.

Clara didn't waste a single second. She lunged forward, grabbed the fallen mercenary's submachine gun from the floor, and without a hint of hesitation, flipped the safety switch down just as she had been taught years ago in a life she had tried so desperately to forget.

Before Marco could recover his footing, Clara opened fire.

The short burst of gunfire caught Marco in the chest, the high-velocity rounds tearing through his tactical vest and throwing him violently against the glass shower wall, which shattered into a thousand glittering pieces. He slid down the wall, gasping for breath, his eyes wide with utter shock as he stared at the young woman standing over him with a smoking automatic weapon.

"You... you're no waitress," Marco choked out, blood bubbling at the corner of his lips.

"I was a marksman in the Serbian military before I ran away from my handler," Clara said, her voice completely devoid of emotion as she looked down at the dying traitor. "I came to America to stop killing people. But you people just won't let me retire."

"Clara!"

A voice roared from the smoke-filled bedroom. Stefano stumbled into the bathroom, his suit jacket torn, blood dripping from a deep gash on his cheek, but his eyes wide with frantic panic. He stopped dead in his tracks, looking at the scene before him: the shattered shower, the dead mercenary, a dying Marco, and Clara Benson holding an automatic rifle like a professional soldier.

Stefano looked from Marco to Clara, the pieces of the puzzle instantly falling into place in his highly analytical mind. The quiet confidence. The lack of fear in the diner. The ability to read a room before anyone spoke. She wasn't an innocent civilian caught in the crossfire. She was a ghost with a lethal pedigree.

"Marco was the leak," Stefano said, his voice a mix of betrayal and dark realization.

"He sold you out to Bertoli," Clara said, lowering the weapon but keeping her finger near the trigger. "The second wave is on their way here to finish you off. We have less than three minutes before this place is completely overrun."

Stefano wiped the blood from his cheek, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across his face. The grief and anger he had carried for ten years since his sister’s death suddenly crystallized into pure, strategic focus. He wasn't dealing with a fragile liability anymore. He had just found an ally.

"Then we don't run," Stefano said, walking over to a hidden panel behind the bathroom mirror, punching in a code on a digital keypad. The wall slid back to reveal a massive, concealed armory stocked with military-grade weaponry, tactical gear, and explosives. "Don Bertoli thinks he is coming to clean up the remains of a broken family. Let’s show him what happens when he steps into my house."

Clara walked up to the armory, her eyes scanning the weapons with expert precision. She bypassed the handguns and picked up a heavy, black tactical assault rifle, checking the chamber and slamming a fresh magazine into place with a practiced, lethal motion.

"You wanted to know my name, Mr. Moretti?" Clara asked, looking up at him, her eyes as cold as the Lake Michigan winter outside. "Let’s go make sure Don Bertoli never forgets it."
