Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

Headline: A BETRAYAL SO DEEP IT WILL SHAKE CHICAGO TO ITS CORE! THE SPY INSIDE THE MORETTI FACTION REVEALED!
The smoke was thick, smelling of burning electronics and cordite. Stefano dragged Clara behind a heavy marble kitchen island inside the suite just as the reinforced wooden doors of the bedroom were blown off their hinges by a tactical breaching charge.
Three men dressed in black urban camouflage and night-vision goggles charged into the room, their submachine guns raised. They weren't standard street thugs; these were highly trained military mercenaries.
Stefano didn't hesitate. He rose from behind the counter, firing three precise shots. The first two mercenaries dropped instantly, bullets finding the narrow gap between their helmets and vests. The third mercenary managed to dive behind a sofa, returning fire and tearing the marble island to pieces with a barrage of bullets.
"Clara! Crawl toward the bathroom!" Stefano shouted over the roar of the gunfire, firing blind shots to keep the mercenary pinned down. "There is a laundry chute! It leads to the basement garage! Go!"
Clara didn't argue. She dropped to her stomach, crawling through the dust and broken glass, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She reached the bathroom, kicked open the small wooden panel of the laundry chute, and looked down into the dark, vertical tunnel. It was a drop of nearly thirty feet into pitch blackness.
Before she could slide in, a shadow fell over her.
She turned around to see a fourth mercenary standing in the bathroom doorway. He had entered through the shattered balcony window. He raised his weapon, aiming it directly at her chest.
"End of the line, girl," the man grunted, his finger tightening on the trigger.
BANG.
The mercenary blinked, a neat red hole appearing in the center of his forehead. He collapsed forward, his weapon clattering across the tile floor. Standing behind him in the shattered window frame was Marco, Stefano’s most trusted lieutenant and the head of his personal security detail.
"Marco!" Clara gasped, relief flooding her system. "Stefano is in the bedroom! We need to help him!"
Marco didn't move to help Stefano. Instead, he stepped over the dead mercenary, his weapon lowered but his expression cold and dead. He looked down at Clara, then reached into his pocket and pulled out a satellite radio.
"Don Bertoli," Marco said into the radio, his voice flat. "The package is secured. Moretti is pinned down in the master suite. Send the second wave to clean him up."
Clara’s blood turned to ice. The security breach. The helicopter. The deactivated perimeter grid. It wasn't a tactical miracle by the Bertoli family; it was an inside job. The man trusted with Stefano's life had sold them out.
"Why?" Clara whispered, backing away until her spine hit the wall beneath the laundry chute. "He trusted you. He treated you like a brother."
"Business is business, sweetheart," Marco said, walking slowly toward her, his heavy boots clicking on the wet tile. "Stefano has gone soft. Starting a multi-million dollar turf war over a waitress? The capos are tired of his sentimentality. Bertoli offered me half of the West Side operations if I delivered Stefano’s head and your body. It’s just math."
From the bedroom, the sound of gunfire ceased, followed by a heavy thud. Marco smiled, a cruel, victory-starved expression. "Looks like the boys finished him off. Now, let’s make this easy, Clara. Walk out with me, and maybe I’ll ask Bertoli to make it quick for you."
Clara looked at the dead mercenary’s gun lying just two feet away from her. She looked at Marco's confident, relaxed stance. He thought she was just a waitress. He thought she was a victim. He didn't know anything about where she came from or what she had done to survive before coming to Chicago.

"I told Stefano I don't like blood money," Clara said, her voice dropping all traces of fear, replaced by a cold, dangerous resonance that made Marco pause. "And I really don't like men who think they can own me."
With a sudden, violent movement, Clara didn't reach for the gun—she grabbed the heavy ceramic lid of the toilet tank next to her and hurled it with all her strength directly at Marco's face.
