CHAPTER 1: THE BOY EVERYONE PRETENDED NOT TO SEE
The ballroom glittered beneath thousands of golden lights. Politicians, celebrities, and billionaires toasted another year of success while cameras flashed from every corner. At the center of the celebration sat Adrian Brooks, a famous billionaire investor who had survived a devastating accident two years earlier. Although confined to a wheelchair, he was still admired as one of the most powerful men in America.
Everyone wanted a photo with Adrian.
Everyone...
...except the little boy hiding beneath the banquet tables.
His clothes were torn. His face was streaked with dirt. His bare feet trembled against the cold marble floor as security guards repeatedly shoved him away.
"Get out of here!" one guard barked.
The guests laughed.
"A homeless kid at a billionaire's gala?"
"What a joke."
But the boy refused to leave.
Instead, he crawled toward Adrian's wheelchair, clutching something tightly in his tiny hand.
Security rushed forward again.
Before they could drag him away, the boy reached out and gently touched Adrian's shoe.
"Mister..."
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"Please... you have to remember my mother."
Adrian frowned.
"I don't know you."
The boy's eyes filled with tears.
"I know you don't."
"But she never forgot you."
The room fell strangely quiet.
Adrian stared into the child's frightened eyes.
Something about them...
Something impossible...
Looked painfully familiar.
Before Adrian could ask another question, security grabbed the boy by the arm.
The child screamed.
"No! Please! Just let me show him!"
A small, rusty metal key slipped from his hand and slid across the polished floor.
It stopped directly beneath Adrian's wheelchair.
Adrian bent down, picked it up, and froze.
Engraved into the old brass key were two words he hadn't seen in over twenty-five years.
LAKE HOUSE.
His face turned completely pale.
