CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET THAT SHOULD HAVE DIED TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

Adrian's hand trembled as he stared at the rusty key.

His closest adviser leaned toward him.

"Sir... are you alright?"

Adrian ignored him.

He looked at the boy instead.

"Where did you get this?"

The child swallowed hard.

"My mom told me to give it to you... if anything ever happened to her."

The room went silent.

Adrian felt his heartbeat pounding in his ears.

"What is your mother's name?"

The boy hesitated.

Then quietly answered...

"Sarah."

The glass in Adrian's hand slipped and shattered across the floor.

Twenty-five years earlier, Sarah had disappeared the night before they were supposed to run away together.

Everyone said she had abandoned him.

Others claimed she'd drowned.

Eventually...

Adrian forced himself to believe she was gone forever.

But now...

This little boy stood before him carrying the one object Sarah had promised never to lose.

Adrian rolled closer.

"How old are you?"

"Ten."

"When did your mother die?"

The boy lowered his head.

"Three days ago."

"And before she died..."

"...she said you were the only man who could protect me."

The guests exchanged nervous glances.

Reporters stopped recording.

Even security stepped back.

Adrian noticed something hanging around the boy's neck.

A tiny silver locket.

He opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

A young Sarah...

Standing beside Adrian.

Both smiling.

On the back, written in faded ink, were chilling words:

"If our son ever finds you... tell him the accident wasn't an accident."

Adrian's blood turned cold.

He suddenly realized the crash that had left him in a wheelchair...

...may have been planned.

And the frightened little beggar kneeling before him...

...wasn't asking for money.

He was asking his father for justice.

The entire ballroom watched in stunned silence as Adrian slowly reached forward...

...and embraced the boy.

But neither of them noticed the elegant woman standing near the exit.

She quietly smiled...

May you like

Deleted a message from her phone...

...and disappeared into the night before anyone could stop her.
