CHAPTER 2 – The Bracelet No One Recognized
Three days later...
Emma disappeared.
She checked herself out of the hospital before sunrise.
No goodbye.
No forwarding address.
Only one envelope waiting for Ethan.
Inside was a single sentence.
"When you finally believe our son is yours... it'll already be too late."
For the first time in years...
Ethan felt fear.
Real fear.
He searched everywhere.
Friends.
Family.
Hotels.
Nothing.
Weeks became months.
His marriage collapsed.
His mansion felt emptier than ever.
Then one rainy afternoon...
A retired neonatal nurse knocked on his office door.
"I've been looking for you."
She placed a tiny silver bracelet on his desk.
"The baby accidentally left this behind."
Ethan recognized it immediately.
The same bracelet he'd ignored in the hospital.
"What about it?"
The nurse took a deep breath.
"That symbol isn't decorative."
"It belongs to a private genetic research foundation."
"They provided emergency treatment after your son's birth because of a rare inherited blood disorder."
Ethan frowned.
"What does that have to do with me?"
The nurse looked directly into his eyes.
"Only biological fathers carrying the Carter family mutation can pass that condition to a child."
Her voice became almost a whisper.
"There was never any possibility that boy belonged to another man."
Ethan's face drained of color.
Every anonymous message...
Every accusation...
Every cruel word...
Had been based on lies.
But the nurse wasn't finished.
She slid one more document across the table.
"This security photo was taken the morning your wife disappeared."
Ethan stared at the image.
Emma wasn't alone.
Standing beside her...
Holding the baby's carrier...
Was his own younger brother.
The same brother who had spent months convincing him Emma couldn't be trusted.
