CHAPTER 2: The Billionaire Nobody Expected

Three days later...

The world mourned Evelyn Carter.

News stations called it a tragic helicopter accident.

Ryan cried perfectly in front of cameras.

He wore black.

Held fake tears.

Accepted endless sympathy.

Within hours, he became the sole acting CEO of Carter Aerospace.

The board applauded him.

Investors trusted him.

Even Evelyn's closest friends believed his performance.

Until an old black limousine stopped outside company headquarters.

An elderly man stepped out.

His gray suit was simple.

His posture was military straight.

No one recognized him.

Ryan frowned.

"And who are you?"

The old man calmly handed him a small silver key.

Ryan's face instantly turned pale.

It was engraved with one word.

LEGACY.

"Impossible..." Ryan whispered.

"You buried that."

The old man smiled.

"No."

"We protected it."

Confused executives looked at one another.

The stranger introduced himself.

"My name is Samuel Hayes."

"I served your father-in-law for thirty-seven years."

"And I recorded every conversation he ever ordered me to."

The room fell silent.

Samuel placed a hard drive onto the conference table.

"Evelyn feared someone close would betray her."

"So she activated Protocol Legacy months ago."

Ryan's breathing became uneven.

Samuel pressed play.

The conference room filled with Evelyn's voice.

"If you're hearing this... my husband tried to kill me."

Everyone froze.

Ryan stumbled backward.

But the recording wasn't finished.

"My father transferred control of Carter Aerospace into a hidden trust years ago."

"If anything happens to me..."

"...Ryan Carter owns absolutely nothing."

The executives stared at Ryan in disbelief.

Then Samuel smiled once more.

"Oh..."

"There's one more surprise."

He turned toward the entrance.

The doors slowly opened.

Everyone gasped.

A woman walked inside.

Wet hair.

A scar across her forehead.

Alive.

Evelyn Carter had survived the fall.

And she wasn't alone.

Behind her stood federal investigators carrying arrest warrants.

Ryan's knees finally gave out.

May you like

Because the woman he thought he had murdered...

Had returned to take back everything.
