CHAPTER 4: Her Mother Ordered Her Death… For a Secret Worth Billions

The photograph slipped from Evelyn's trembling hands.

"No..."

She stared at the smiling faces frozen in time.

Her father.

Ryan.

Vanessa.

And her mother, Catherine Carter.

The date printed in the corner made her blood run cold.

The picture had been taken two years before Ryan ever "accidentally" met her.

It wasn't fate.

It wasn't love.

It had all been planned.

Samuel quietly handed her another envelope.

"This was your father's final instruction."

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My dearest Evelyn...

If you're reading this, then I failed to protect you.

Never trust Catherine. She stopped being your mother the day she chose power over family.

Tears rolled down Evelyn's cheeks.

"No... Mom would never..."

Samuel interrupted gently.

"I wish that were true."

He placed a tablet on the desk.

A hidden surveillance video began to play.

The footage showed Catherine sitting inside a luxury restaurant with Ryan months before the wedding.

Evelyn watched in horror.

Catherine slid a thick folder across the table.

Ryan opened it.

Inside were photographs...

Of Evelyn.

Her daily schedule.

Her security codes.

Her medical records.

Even the engagement ring Ryan would later use to propose.

Then Catherine smiled.

"Make her fall in love with you."

"When she signs the marriage papers, everything becomes simple."

Ryan laughed.

"And after I get control?"

Catherine calmly sipped her wine.

"She disappears."

Evelyn collapsed into a chair.

Her entire marriage...

Had been arranged by her own mother.

Before she could speak, every light inside Carter Aerospace suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the building.

Emergency alarms echoed through the hallways.

Then...

One by one...

The giant monitors in the boardroom flickered to life.

A live video feed appeared.

Catherine Carter stood inside the family's private mansion.

She was smiling.

"Congratulations, Evelyn."

"You survived."

Her voice was calm.

Almost proud.

"I underestimated you."

Evelyn's fists clenched.

"Why?"

Catherine laughed softly.

"You still don't understand."

"I never wanted Carter Aerospace."

"I wanted what your father hid."

Samuel's face turned white.

"The Vault..."

Catherine looked directly into the camera.

"Exactly."

She slowly lifted an old silver key.

The same symbol engraved on it.

LEGACY.

"I already have one key."

"You have the other."

"When both keys come together..."

"...they unlock something worth far more than the company."

Evelyn whispered,

"What are you talking about?"

Catherine smiled wider.

"Your father didn't build a billion-dollar business."

"He built a trillion-dollar secret."

The screen suddenly went black.

Seconds later...

Every phone inside the building vibrated at the same time.

BREAKING NEWS

The Carter Family Mansion Is On Fire.

Samuel looked at Evelyn in horror.

"The vault..."

Then his phone rang.

An unfamiliar voice spoke only one sentence.

"If Evelyn wants to know why her father really died..."

"Tell her to come alone."

The call ended.

Samuel slowly looked at Evelyn.

"This was never about your inheritance."

"It was always about the secret buried beneath your family's mansion."

And somewhere inside the burning estate...

May you like

Someone was waiting.

Someone the world believed had died twenty years ago.
