CHAPTER 2 – The Pack in the Darkness
Alex screamed as the wolf crashed into him with unbelievable force.
Victoria slipped from his arms and landed in the snow several feet away.
The impact sent Alex sprawling backward.
He expected razor-sharp teeth to tear into his throat.
Instead...
The wolf stopped only inches from his face.
Growling.
Not attacking.
Warning.
Confused, Alex scrambled away on his hands and knees.
Then another howl echoed through the forest.
And another.
From every direction.
His blood turned cold.
He wasn't facing one wolf.
He had wandered into the territory of an entire pack.
Dark shapes appeared between the trees.
Five.
Seven.
Ten wolves.
Their glowing eyes surrounded the clearing.
Panic overwhelmed him.
He abandoned Victoria without thinking.
Without looking back.
Without even checking if she was alive.
He ran.
Branches whipped across his face.
Snow swallowed his boots.
Behind him came the thunder of pounding paws.
The wolves weren't chasing randomly.
They were driving him.
Herding him.
Straight toward something hidden deeper in the woods.
Alex burst through a line of trees—
—and suddenly the ground disappeared beneath him.
The snow-covered earth collapsed.
He plunged nearly twenty feet into an abandoned hunting pit lined with jagged rocks.
His leg snapped with a sickening crack.
He screamed until his voice failed.
Above him, dozens of wolf eyes stared silently into the pit.
None jumped down.
None attacked.
They simply watched.
Hours passed.
The freezing cold slowly drained the strength from his body.
For the first time that night...
Alex realized he might actually die.
Meanwhile...
Victoria slowly opened her eyes.
Her head pounded.
Everything was blurry.
The last thing she remembered was drinking hot chocolate.
Now she was lying alone in deep snow.
The giant wolf stood only a few feet away.
She expected death.
Instead...
The enormous animal quietly approached.
It sniffed her hand.
Then gently nudged her shoulder as if urging her to stand.
Moments later several smaller wolves emerged carrying something astonishing.
Fresh rabbit meat.
They dropped it beside her.
Victoria stared in disbelief.
The wolves weren't hunting her.
They were protecting her.
Then the great gray wolf turned and began walking through the forest.
After several steps, it stopped and looked back.
Almost as if asking her to follow.
With no other choice...
Victoria did.
She had no idea the animal was leading her toward a secret hidden for decades.
