CHAPTER 3 – The Forest Chose Justice

The wolves guided Victoria through the snowy forest until she reached an old ranger cabin.

Smoke rose from the chimney.

An elderly man opened the door before she could knock.

"I've been watching those wolves for over thirty years," he said calmly.

"They've never brought a stranger here before."

Inside, Victoria recovered enough strength to explain everything.

The ranger immediately contacted emergency services.

When rescue teams searched the forest the next morning, they found Alex trapped inside the abandoned pit.

Barely alive.

His broken phone still contained deleted messages between him and Emily.

Investigators recovered internet searches:

"How long before someone dies from hypothermia?"

"Can wolves destroy evidence?"

"Remote forests with no surveillance."

Every horrifying detail of his plan came to light.

The sleeping pills.

The isolated road.

The staged disappearance.

Emily was arrested for helping cover up the crime after police discovered she had helped Alex purchase supplies using fake identities.

During the trial, prosecutors asked Alex one question.

"When your wife fell unconscious... why didn't you call for help?"

He had no answer.

Victoria testified with remarkable composure.

"I thought monsters looked like wolves."

She paused.

"I was wrong."

"The wolves showed me mercy."

"The monster drove me there."

Alex was sentenced to decades in prison for attempted murder, conspiracy, and multiple additional charges uncovered during the investigation.

Months later, Victoria returned to the forest with the old ranger.

She left fresh meat near the ancient pine tree.

The great gray wolf appeared silently between the trees.

It watched her for several long seconds.

Victoria smiled through tears.

"Thank you..."

The wolf gave one final quiet howl before disappearing into the snow-covered wilderness.

Some people still claim that pack protects innocent travelers who lose their way during winter storms.

Others say they're only wild animals.

Victoria knows the truth.

Sometimes...

The creatures we fear most become our greatest protectors.

And sometimes...

The greatest monster wears a human face.
