CHAPTER 2 — "Break That Window... She's Dying!"

The first 911 operator thought it was another false alarm.

Static filled the line.

A woman's weak breathing.

Then a whisper.

"...please... help my baby..."

"Ma'am, can you tell me your address?"

Valeria struggled to remain conscious.

"Lomas... de Angelópolis... my husband... locked me... inside..."

The operator immediately straightened in her chair.

"Are you alone?"

"...yes..."

"Are you able to unlock the front door?"

"...security... system..."

"...he locked... everything..."

Another painful cry echoed through the call.

Then silence.

The operator's training took over.

"Priority One obstetric emergency. Possible placental abruption. Female trapped inside residence. Dispatch police, firefighters, and advanced life support immediately."

Within seconds, sirens cut through the quiet streets of the upscale neighborhood.

Inside the house, Valeria could barely keep her eyes open.

She had finally reached the living room.

The cordless landline had slipped from her blood-covered fingers.

Her dress was soaked.

The expensive white floor looked like the scene of a violent crime.

She pressed both hands against her stomach.

Nothing.

No tiny kick.

No movement.

No reassuring sign that her daughter was still fighting.

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

"I'm sorry..."

"I'm trying..."

Outside, the first patrol car arrived.

Officer Daniela Ruiz ran toward the entrance and repeatedly rang the bell.

No response.

She looked through the decorative glass beside the front door.

Her heart stopped.

A pregnant woman lay motionless on the floor.

Blood surrounded her.

"Fire department!"

"We need forced entry!"

Firefighters rushed forward carrying heavy equipment.

One of them tried the reinforced steel door.

Locked.

Electronic deadbolt.

Security shutters engaged.

Another firefighter checked the windows.

Triple-layer security glass.

"Too strong."

"We'll lose precious minutes."

The senior captain looked at the side window.

"Forget the damage."

"Break it."

The first strike barely cracked the glass.

The second sent spiderweb fractures racing across it.

The third blow exploded the entire panel inward.

Alarms screamed throughout the mansion.

The firefighters climbed through the opening.

One immediately knelt beside Valeria.

"No pulse!"

Another checked again.

"Wait... weak pulse."

"Barely there."

The paramedic lifted her shirt.

His face changed instantly.

"Placental abruption."

"Massive hemorrhage."

"We're losing both."

At the same moment...

Champagne glasses clinked inside Club Imperial.

The ballroom glittered with crystal chandeliers.

A string quartet played softly while waiters served imported wine.

Mauricio smiled beside his mother as photographers took family portraits.

"You made the right choice," Beatriz whispered proudly.

"I knew she was exaggerating."

Guests applauded as a giant birthday cake was wheeled into the center of the room.

The emcee raised his microphone.

"A toast to the incredible Beatriz Cárdenas!"

Everyone stood.

Everyone smiled.

Except one person.

Mauricio's younger cousin, Andrés.

He quietly looked at his phone.

Six missed calls from Valeria.

Then another notification.

Emergency services.

His face turned pale.

"Mauricio..."

"I think something's wrong."

Mauricio barely glanced at him.

"Later."

"The speech is starting."

Inside the ambulance, chaos erupted.

"Blood pressure sixty over thirty."

"She's crashing."

"Prepare transfusion."

"No fetal heartbeat."

"Check again!"

Another ultrasound.

Silence.

The young paramedic swallowed hard.

"I still can't find one."

Valeria slowly opened her eyes.

"...my daughter..."

The doctor leaned close.

"We're doing everything we can."

"Please..."

"...save her..."

She lost consciousness before hearing the answer.

Operating Room Three.

San Gabriel Women's Hospital.

The trauma team was already waiting.

Dr. Elena Navarro quickly reviewed the report.

"Thirty-eight weeks."

"Massive placental separation."

"Cardiac arrest in transit."

"Prepare emergency cesarean."

The doors burst open.

"Move!"

Doctors surrounded the stretcher.

"Starting CPR!"

"Epinephrine!"

"Scalpel!"

Within seconds, the operating room transformed into controlled chaos.

One team fought to restart Valeria's heart.

Another raced to deliver the baby before oxygen deprivation caused irreversible damage.

Time no longer mattered.

Every second meant another million dying brain cells.

Dr. Navarro made the first incision.

"Come on..."

"Come on..."

The room fell silent as she carefully lifted out the tiny infant.

The baby was completely blue.

Motionless.

No cry.

No breathing.

One nurse whispered...

"Oh, God..."

Another immediately carried the newborn to the neonatal station.

"Begin resuscitation!"

Tiny compressions.

Oxygen.

Medication.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Still nothing.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the room...

A long, piercing tone filled the air.

Valeria's heart monitor became a flat line.

"No pulse."

"Resume compressions!"

"One..."

"Two..."

"Three..."

The doctors refused to stop.

Outside the operating room, firefighters who had rescued her stood in stunned silence.

One of them still wore bloodstains on his gloves.

He quietly removed the body camera from his helmet.

Neither he nor anyone else realized...

that the camera had recorded everything.

The shattered window.

The blood-covered floor.

The locked security panel.

The emergency dispatch radio.

And one sentence spoken by a police officer after checking the home's electronic system:

"The house wasn't malfunctioning..."

"...Someone locked her inside remotely."

Those words had just been captured forever.

And before sunrise...

That recording would become the single piece of evidence that would destroy Mauricio Cárdenas, his mother...

May you like

...and everyone who had laughed while a young mother fought to stay alive.
