Chapter 5

Mauricio had repeated the same sentence six times.
"I never believed her life was in danger."
Detective Sofía Ramos looked at him without speaking.
She simply reached into her folder, removed a tablet, and placed it on the table.
"I'd like you to watch something."
Mauricio frowned.
"What is this?"
"The security camera from your kitchen."
His face immediately lost color.
"There... there are cameras inside the house?"
"There were."
"The previous owner installed them. Your security company stores encrypted recordings for thirty days."
His throat tightened.
"I don't remember any cameras."
Detective Ramos pressed Play.
The video began.
The timestamp read 7:14:32 PM.
Valeria stood in the kitchen, smiling weakly as she poured herself a glass of water.
Then everything changed.
The glass slipped from her hand.
It shattered.
She doubled over in pain.
"Mauricio..."
The camera clearly captured him turning around.
He looked directly at her.
For several seconds, he simply watched.
The recording continued.
Valeria fell to her knees.
Blood appeared beneath her dress.
She cried out in agony.
"Please... call an ambulance..."
Mauricio walked toward her.
For one brief moment, Detective Ramos thought he might help.
Instead, he stopped less than three feet away.
He looked at the blood.
He looked at his wife.
Then his phone rang.
The screen showed:
Mom Calling.
The detectives listened in silence as Beatriz's voice filled the room.
"Don't tell me she's ruining my birthday again."
Then came Valeria's desperate scream.
"I'm bleeding!"
Even through the speakers, her terror was heartbreaking.
The recording showed Mauricio looking at the blood one last time.
Then he calmly picked up his car keys.
He adjusted his jacket.
Straightened his tie.
Walked to the front door.
Activated the security system.
And left.
The video ended.
Forty-seven seconds.
Forty-seven seconds that erased every excuse he had offered.
The room remained silent.
Detective Ramos finally spoke.
"Would you like to change your statement?"
Mauricio stared at the dark tablet screen.
"I..."
"I thought..."
"I didn't..."
For the first time since arriving at the hospital...
He couldn't finish a sentence.
Across the hall, another conversation was taking place.
Dr. Elena Navarro met with Valeria's older sister, Isabella Montes.
"Can I see her?"
The doctor nodded slowly.
"For only a few minutes."
"She's stable, but she's still unconscious."
"And my niece?"
The doctor's expression softened.
"The baby survived."
"But she suffered several minutes without adequate oxygen."
"We won't know the full extent of the damage until the next few days."
Isabella covered her mouth as tears rolled down her face.
"What did my sister do to deserve this?"
Dr. Navarro answered quietly.
"Nothing."
Inside the neonatal intensive care unit, the tiny baby girl rested beneath warm lights.
A breathing tube helped her fragile lungs.
Her heartbeat was finally steady.
One nurse gently adjusted the blanket.
"We need a name for her chart."
Another looked at the medical file.
"The mother hadn't filled it in yet."
The nurse smiled sadly.
"Then we'll call her 'Baby Hope' until her mother wakes up."
Meanwhile, the birthday party had become the biggest scandal in Puebla.
Clips from Beatriz's livestream spread across social media.
In one video, she laughed while saying,
"She always invents emergencies."
Someone edited the footage beside images of firefighters carrying Valeria into the ambulance.
Millions of people watched.
Thousands shared it.
Comments flooded every platform.
"She mocked a dying woman."
"That family belongs in prison."
"Justice for Valeria and her baby."
Reporters began gathering outside the hospital before midnight.
Television vans lined the street.
The story was no longer private.
It had become national news.
Back inside the interrogation room, Detective Ramos received another message from the forensic laboratory.
Digital Evidence Confirmed.
She opened the report.
Mauricio hadn't only activated the security system.
He had also received two emergency notifications on his phone after leaving the house.
7:24 PM
Emergency Alarm Triggered: Glass Break Detected.
He ignored it.
7:26 PM
Emergency Services Access Granted. Fire Department Entry Confirmed.
He ignored that too.
Instead...
Phone location data showed he remained inside the private club.
At 7:28 PM, surveillance footage captured him smiling for a group photograph while raising a champagne glass beside his mother.
Detective Ramos slowly closed the report.
She walked back into the room.
Without saying a word, she placed the photographs in front of Mauricio.
He stared at them.
The timestamps.
The notifications.
The smiling birthday picture.
His own face.
He finally whispered,
"I should have gone back..."
Detective Ramos nodded.
"Yes."
"You should have."
She stood up.
"Because from this moment forward..."
"...this investigation is no longer about a tragic mistake."
She paused before delivering the words that made Mauricio's entire body go numb.
"It's now an investigation into whether you knowingly left your wife and unborn daughter to die."
Outside the room, two uniformed officers were already walking toward the door.
May you like
And neither of them had come to ask more questions.
