CHAPTER 3 — "The Video That Changed Everything"

The operating room was silent except for the rhythmic sound of chest compressions.

"Continue CPR."

"Epinephrine, one more dose."

"Charge the defibrillator."

Dr. Elena Navarro looked from the motionless newborn to Valeria's lifeless body.

Both were slipping away.

"Clear!"

The electric shock jolted Valeria's body.

Nothing.

Again.

"Clear!"

Another shock.

Still no heartbeat.

The room felt impossibly heavy.

No one wanted to be the first to say the words every doctor feared.

Then—

BEEP.

A weak spike appeared on the monitor.

"Wait..."

"There!"

Another beat.

Then another.

The entire team seemed to breathe again.

"We have a pulse!"

It was faint.

Dangerously unstable.

But Valeria's heart had started beating once more.

No one celebrated.

The baby still wasn't breathing.

At the neonatal station, a pediatric specialist continued working without pause.

"Oxygen."

"Again."

"Tiny compressions."

"Come on, sweetheart..."

Thirty seconds.

One minute.

Two minutes.

Every second without oxygen reduced the baby's chances.

The nurses exchanged anxious glances.

Then...

A tiny cough.

Almost too soft to hear.

Everyone froze.

Another weak gasp.

The baby's fingers twitched.

"She's breathing!"

The room erupted with relief.

A fragile cry filled the operating room.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't strong.

But it was enough.

Several nurses wiped away tears.

Dr. Navarro closed her eyes for a brief moment.

"Both are alive."

"For now."

Outside the hospital, two police detectives arrived.

Fire Captain Ricardo Salazar was already waiting with a sealed evidence bag.

"I think you need to see this."

Inside were photographs taken during the rescue.

Blood across the kitchen.

Broken glass.

The reinforced front door.

And the home's electronic security panel.

Detective Sofía Ramos frowned.

"Who locked the system?"

"The homeowner."

"Can we prove it?"

Captain Salazar handed her another item.

"The security company already responded."

She opened the report.

7:18 PM

Remote Lockdown Activated

Administrator Device: Mauricio Cárdenas

Biometric Confirmation Successful

Her expression changed instantly.

"So he activated it himself."

"And according to emergency dispatch..."

"He was told his wife was in labor before he left."

Captain Salazar nodded slowly.

"He knew."

Meanwhile...

The birthday celebration was reaching its peak.

A live mariachi band played as guests danced around Beatriz.

Phones recorded every moment.

Social media filled with smiling photos.

No one noticed Mauricio step into the hallway after his phone vibrated repeatedly.

Twenty-three missed calls.

Five voicemails.

A message from an unknown number.

URGENT. PLEASE CONTACT SAN GABRIEL HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY.

His stomach tightened.

He called back.

A nurse answered.

"Mr. Cárdenas?"

"Yes."

"Your wife is in critical condition."

He laughed nervously.

"There must be some mistake."

"I'm at my mother's birthday."

The nurse's silence frightened him more than any words could.

"Sir..."

"There is no mistake."

"Your wife suffered massive blood loss."

"She required emergency surgery."

"Your daughter was delivered under cardiac arrest."

Mauricio's face turned white.

"...What?"

"You should come immediately."

The line disconnected.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

Then Beatriz approached carrying a champagne glass.

"What happened?"

He swallowed.

"Valeria..."

"...is in surgery."

Beatriz rolled her eyes.

"So?"

"They're doctors."

"They'll fix whatever little panic attack she had."

Mauricio wasn't listening anymore.

For the first time that night...

He remembered the blood on the kitchen floor.

He remembered her grabbing his leg.

He remembered the terror in her voice.

His hands began to shake.

Twenty minutes later, his black SUV sped toward the hospital.

But another vehicle arrived first.

A police cruiser quietly parked beside the emergency entrance.

Detective Sofía Ramos stepped out carrying a folder.

She wasn't there to comfort a worried husband.

She was there to begin a criminal investigation.

Because preliminary evidence suggested something far more serious than negligence.

It suggested that a man had knowingly trapped his critically pregnant wife inside a locked house.

And if either Valeria or the baby died...

The charges could include homicide.

Back at the mansion, crime scene investigators walked carefully through the bloodstained kitchen.

One technician examined the home's smart security system.

Another downloaded data from the central control unit.

"Detective..."

"I think you should see this."

The computer screen displayed a complete activity log.

7:17:42 PM — Front Door Locked

7:17:44 PM — All Windows Secured

7:17:48 PM — Emergency Override Disabled

7:18:01 PM — Remote Confirmation Sent to Owner's Phone

But one final line made everyone in the room fall silent.

7:18:09 PM

Voice Recording Saved.

Modern smart homes automatically recorded ten seconds of audio whenever the security system was armed.

The technician clicked "Play."

The room filled with voices.

Valeria crying.

"Mauricio... please... don't leave..."

Then Mauricio's calm reply.

"My mother only turns sixty-five once."

A painful sob.

"Our daughter..."

Then the final sentence.

Cold.

Clear.

Impossible to misunderstand.

"You can wait a few hours."

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Detective Ramos slowly closed the laptop.

She looked around the silent room.

"He didn't just abandon her."

"He knew exactly what he was doing."

And at that very moment...

Mauricio walked through the hospital doors, believing he was about to explain everything.

May you like

He had no idea that the house itself had already become the most reliable witness against him.
