CHAPTER 4 — "The Husband Became the Prime Suspect"

Mauricio Cárdenas pushed through the emergency room doors, still wearing the same tailored suit from his mother's birthday party.

The scent of expensive cologne clung to him.

A streak of birthday cake frosting still stained the cuff of his jacket.

It was impossible not to notice the contrast.

Inside the intensive care unit, doctors were fighting to keep his wife alive.

Outside, he looked like a man arriving from a celebration.

A nurse recognized him immediately.

"Mr. Cárdenas?"

"Yes."

"Please wait here."

Her voice was polite—but distant.

She disappeared behind the ICU doors.

People in the waiting room watched him in silence.

One firefighter nudged another.

"That's him."

"The husband."

The firefighter still had dried blood on his boots from carrying Valeria out of the house.

He looked at Mauricio with open disgust.

"You should've seen her," he muttered.

"She crawled through broken glass trying to save her baby."

Mauricio pretended not to hear.

Minutes later, Dr. Elena Navarro stepped into the hallway.

Her surgical gown was stained with blood.

She looked exhausted.

"Mr. Cárdenas."

He rushed toward her.

"How's my wife? How's my daughter?"

The doctor's expression hardened.

"They're alive."

"For now."

Mauricio let out a long breath of relief.

"Thank God..."

She interrupted him.

"Don't thank God."

"Thank the firefighters who broke into your house."

"If they had arrived five minutes later, I would be signing two death certificates."

The hallway fell silent.

Mauricio opened his mouth but found no words.

Dr. Navarro continued.

"Your wife suffered a massive placental abruption."

"She lost nearly half her blood volume."

"Her heart stopped."

"Your daughter's brain was deprived of oxygen."

"We still don't know if she'll suffer permanent damage."

Each sentence struck harder than the last.

Finally, the doctor asked a question that froze him.

"Why was your wife locked inside the house?"

Mauricio blinked.

"I..."

"It was the security system."

"It locks automatically."

Dr. Navarro stared directly into his eyes.

"The firefighters say otherwise."

Before Mauricio could answer, two detectives approached.

Detective Sofía Ramos showed her badge.

"Mr. Mauricio Cárdenas?"

"Yes."

"We need to ask you several questions."

"Now?"

"Now."

She led him into a private consultation room.

The door closed.

A digital recorder was placed on the table.

The red light blinked.

Recording.

Detective Ramos folded her hands.

"What time did you leave your home?"

"Around seven."

"Did your wife ask you to stay?"

"...Yes."

"Did she tell you she was bleeding?"

Mauricio hesitated.

"A little."

"A little?"

"She gets emotional."

"She tends to exaggerate."

The detective made a note.

"Interesting."

She opened a folder.

Inside were crime scene photographs.

Blood covering the kitchen floor.

The shattered side window.

The ambulance.

Firefighters carrying Valeria.

Mauricio swallowed hard.

"I didn't know it was that serious."

Detective Ramos slid another document across the table.

"The smart-home company confirmed that your security system was activated manually from your phone."

He stared at the paper.

"I don't remember doing that."

"You don't remember?"

"No."

She calmly placed his phone records beside it.

"Your fingerprint unlocked your phone."

"Face recognition confirmed the command."

"The system required three separate confirmations."

Mauricio's breathing became uneven.

"I... I always activate the alarm."

"It's a habit."

The detective leaned forward.

"Even when your thirty-eight-week pregnant wife is bleeding on the floor?"

Silence.

Meanwhile, across town...

Beatriz was still entertaining the last of her guests.

She laughed as friends complimented the extravagant party.

Then her phone rang.

"Mauricio?"

"No."

It was another family member.

His voice trembled.

"The police are questioning him."

Beatriz frowned.

"For what?"

"They think Valeria's injuries weren't just an accident."

Her smile disappeared.

"That's ridiculous."

Then another call arrived.

This time from one of the guests.

"Beatriz..."

"The livestream..."

"What about it?"

"People are leaving comments."

Thousands of them.

Someone had posted a photo of firefighters breaking into Mauricio's house.

Another showed the ambulance.

Another identified the address.

Then a paramedic anonymously wrote:

"While we were fighting to save a mother and her baby... her husband was drinking champagne."

The comments exploded.

"Arrest him."

"That woman almost died."

"How could anyone leave her?"

"This isn't neglect. It's cruelty."

Beatriz's hands began to shake.

For the first time all evening...

She felt fear.

Back at the hospital, Detective Ramos received a message from the forensic team.

New Evidence Recovered.

She opened the attachment.

It wasn't another photograph.

It was a security camera recording from inside the house.

The kitchen.

Clear audio.

Crystal-clear video.

Everything had been captured.

Valeria collapsing.

The blood.

Her desperate pleas.

Mauricio looking directly at the growing pool of blood.

And then...

Without offering help...

He calmly picked up his car keys...

Walked to the front door...

Activated the security system...

And left.

Detective Ramos watched the recording twice.

Then she quietly whispered,

"He saw everything."

She closed the tablet and looked toward the interrogation room.

At that exact moment, Mauricio was still insisting,

"I never believed she was in real danger."

Detective Ramos stood up.

With the video now in her hands...

May you like

She knew that lie was about to collapse.
