CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO DIE

Daniel became famous overnight.

Television stations called him "the tragic widower."

People cried during interviews.

Reporters praised his courage.

Flowers arrived at his mansion every day.

Meanwhile...

The courts began processing Emily's estate.

Exactly as Daniel had planned.

Until forty-eight hours later.

Hundreds of miles away...

A small fishing boat spotted something floating between massive waves.

At first they thought it was debris.

Then someone noticed movement.

It was a woman.

Barely alive.

Emily.

When Daniel pushed her overboard, she had struck a partially submerged emergency life raft that had broken loose during the storm.

Unconscious...

She drifted for hours before currents carried her toward a remote island.

The fishermen immediately rushed her to a small coastal hospital.

Doctors were stunned she survived.

Broken ribs.

Hypothermia.

A severe concussion.

But alive.

Very much alive.

Emily begged the doctors to keep her identity secret.

"No one can know."

Especially not Daniel.

Back in the city, Henry Carter's former security chief arrived quietly.

He wasn't surprised.

Before the wedding, Emily had confessed that something felt wrong.

Without telling Daniel, the old man had arranged satellite tracking, emergency beacons hidden inside Emily's jewelry, and a confidential rescue protocol.

Not because he knew Daniel would attack.

Because he feared someone eventually would.

While Daniel celebrated his "inheritance,"

Financial investigators made a disturbing discovery.

Every large transfer required Emily's biometric authorization.

Her fingerprints.

Her facial recognition.

Her personal confirmation.

Without her...

Almost none of the fortune could actually be accessed.

Daniel exploded with rage.

His lawyer looked terrified.

"Someone changed the estate documents."

Daniel slammed the table.

"When?"

"About... three weeks before the wedding."

Emily had quietly rewritten everything.

If she died under suspicious circumstances...

Every dollar would be frozen indefinitely.

Daniel suddenly realized something horrifying.

If investigators proved murder...

He wouldn't inherit anything.

Instead...

He would lose everything.

Then came another disaster.

Detectives recovered security footage from the harbor.

A mechanic admitted Daniel had secretly disabled several safety cameras aboard the yacht.

Insurance investigators discovered Daniel had dramatically increased Emily's life insurance policy only eleven days before the wedding.

The evidence was beginning to pile up.

Daniel could still escape.

Only if Emily stayed dead.

So he hired someone to find the missing body.

But he was already too late.

Because at that exact moment...

Emily stood quietly inside a private courtroom.

Hidden from the public.

Preparing to testify.

The judge opened the sealed file.

Everyone inside the room gasped.

Daniel Brooks...

was no longer considered a grieving husband.

He had just become the prime suspect in an attempted murder investigation.

And Emily wasn't finished yet.

She had one final surprise waiting for him.
