CHAPTER 5 — THE WITNESSES HE COULDN'T SILENCE

News of Robert's evidence spread quietly through former employees.
Within a week, Grace's office phone wouldn't stop ringing.
A dishwasher.
A baker.
A delivery driver.
A waitress.
Then someone unexpected walked through the door.
Frank Dawson.
Victor's first head chef.
He was seventy-two years old now, walking with a cane.
The moment he saw me, tears filled his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For staying silent."
Frank admitted he had witnessed nearly every major accident inside the restaurant.
Victor always handled them the same way.
Offer cash.
Demand silence.
Threaten immigration status.
Threaten jobs.
Threaten families.
Grace asked, "Why speak now?"
Frank reached into his coat pocket and removed an old cassette tape.
"I made this twenty-one years ago."
His hands trembled.
"I thought nobody would ever believe me."
A technician converted the recording into digital audio.
Victor's younger voice filled the room.
"If inspectors ask, Evelyn slipped at home."
Another voice asked, "What if she tells them the truth?"
Victor laughed.
"Who's going to believe a woman covered in flour over a successful businessman?"
Frank lowered his head.
"I heard those words every night for years."
Grace immediately submitted the recording as evidence.
The prosecutor's office called the next morning.
They wanted every document.
Every witness.
Every recording.
Meanwhile, Victor hired one of the most expensive criminal defense attorneys in the state.
During a press conference, his lawyer confidently declared:
"My client is the victim of an organized smear campaign by a bitter ex-wife."
I watched the statement on television without reacting.
Grace smiled.
"He still doesn't understand."
"What?"
"He's fighting the wrong enemy."
"The case isn't Evelyn versus Victor anymore."
May you like
"It's Victor versus the evidence."
And evidence never gets tired.
