CHAPTER 7 — THE SON HE NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED

The grand jury hearing was only five days away when someone knocked on my front door just after sunrise.

A young man stood on the porch.

He couldn't have been older than twenty-four.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

The same gray eyes Victor saw every morning in the mirror.

He held a worn backpack and an old photograph.

"You don't know me," he said quietly.

"My name is Noah."

"I think... Victor Hale is my father."

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Grace invited him inside.

Noah explained that his mother, a waitress who had worked at Victor's first diner more than twenty years ago, had recently passed away after a long illness.

Before she died, she handed him a small envelope.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Several old pay stubs from Victor's restaurant.

And a letter.

"If anything ever happens to me, find Evelyn. She was the only decent person in that restaurant. She'll know what to do."

My hands trembled as I finished reading.

Noah looked embarrassed.

"I'm not here for money."

"I just want to know whether my mother was telling the truth."

Grace asked gently, "Did Victor ever know about you?"

Noah nodded once.

"My mother told him."

"What did he say?"

Noah swallowed.

"He offered her ten thousand dollars to disappear."

The room fell silent.

Then Noah reached into his backpack and removed something none of us expected.

An old ledger.

"My mom kept this hidden for years."

Inside were handwritten cash payments Victor had made to employees he never reported.

Beside many names were initials.

Hours worked.

Amounts paid.

And in Victor's own handwriting...

'Keep off payroll.'

Grace looked at me.

"This is the missing link."

The fake employees.

The missing taxes.

The unreported cash.

Everything fit together.

Noah looked down.

"I don't want revenge."

I placed my hand over his.

"Neither do I."

"I just want the truth."

For the first time in years...

May you like

I realized Victor hadn't only stolen from me.

He had stolen pieces of countless lives.
