CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN NO ONE TRUSTED

The old man had been sitting in the same chair for more than three hours.

Passengers rushed past him without a second glance. Children laughed, flight announcements echoed through the terminal, and rolling suitcases rattled across the polished floor. Yet the old man never moved.

His clothes were worn and faded. His beard was untrimmed. His hands rested quietly on an old canvas bag that looked as though it had traveled through decades of hardship.

Airport employees began watching him.

At first, they assumed he was waiting for someone.

Then another hour passed.

And another.

Still, he didn't leave.

"He hasn't bought food."

"He hasn't checked a flight board."

"He hasn't spoken to anyone."

The whispers spread.

Soon security became concerned.

In a world where airports couldn't afford mistakes, unusual behavior meant potential danger.

A report was filed.

Within minutes, Officer Daniel Brooks arrived with his highly trained German Shepherd, Rex.

Rex wasn't an ordinary dog.

He was one of the department's best K-9 officers, trained to detect explosives, narcotics, and dangerous suspects.

People stepped aside as Daniel approached.

The atmosphere immediately changed.

The old man slowly lifted his head.

His eyes looked exhausted.

But strangely calm.

"Sir," Daniel said firmly. "Can you identify yourself?"

The old man stared at him.

No response.

Daniel's patience began to wear thin.

"Sir, if you refuse to cooperate, I will be forced to inspect your belongings."

Again, silence.

The tension spread through the terminal.

Several passengers took out their phones.

Security guards moved closer.

The old man's bag suddenly became the center of attention.

Daniel tightened his grip on Rex's leash.

The German Shepherd was staring directly at the old man.

Not the bag.

The man.

"Rex," Daniel commanded.

The dog became alert.

"Check him."

The crowd held its breath.

Then something happened that no one expected.

Rex walked forward.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The old man never flinched.

The dog stopped in front of him.

Everyone expected barking.

Aggression.

An alert signal.

Instead...

Rex gently pressed his head against the old man's chest.

The entire terminal fell silent.

The German Shepherd's tail began to wag.

Then the dog sat beside him and rested his head on the old man's knee.

Officer Brooks froze.

Something was very wrong.

Or perhaps...

Something was very right.
