CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET REX REMEMBERED

"Rex! Back!"
Officer Brooks immediately pulled on the leash.
But Rex refused.
The dog remained beside the old man.
Then something even stranger happened.
The old man's trembling hand slowly reached down.
He stroked the German Shepherd behind the ears.
The exact spot Rex loved.
The dog's eyes softened instantly.
A deep emotional sound escaped his throat.
Not a warning.
Not aggression.
Recognition.
The crowd stared in confusion.
Officer Brooks knelt beside his partner.
"Do you know this man?" he asked.
The old man finally spoke.
His voice was weak.
"I knew another dog."
The officer frowned.
The old man swallowed hard.
"His father."
The terminal became silent again.
Daniel's expression changed.
Rex's father had been a legendary police dog named Titan.
Titan had died years earlier during a rescue operation.
Very few people knew him personally.
"How do you know Titan?" Daniel asked.
The old man's eyes filled with tears.
For several seconds he couldn't answer.
Then he opened his old bag.
Security instantly tensed.
But instead of a weapon...
He slowly removed a faded photograph.
In the picture stood a younger version of himself.
Beside him was Titan.
The legendary police dog.
The officer's eyes widened.
The old man pointed at the photograph.
"I trained him."
Daniel's heart skipped a beat.
The crowd gasped.
The old man wasn't a threat.
He wasn't dangerous.
He wasn't a criminal.
He was Michael Turner.
The retired K-9 trainer whose methods had helped build the department's entire canine program decades earlier.
Many younger officers had never even seen his face.
But his work had trained generations of service dogs.
Including Titan.
And indirectly...
Rex.
Daniel looked stunned.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
The old man lowered his head.
"I tried."
His voice cracked.
"But nobody listens to old men anymore."
The words hit harder than anyone expected.
Several airport employees looked away in embarrassment.
Then Daniel noticed something else.
The old man's hands were shaking badly.
His face was pale.
Far paler than before.
"Sir..."
Daniel's voice softened.
"Are you alright?"
Michael forced a weak smile.
"No."
Then he collapsed from the chair.
Chaos erupted.
People screamed.
Medical teams rushed toward him.
Rex immediately lay beside the unconscious man and refused to move.
May you like
And when paramedics checked Michael's pocket...
They discovered a folded document that made everyone in the terminal go silent.
