CHAPTER 1 — "Just Smile... I'll Protect You."

The billionaire's penthouse overlooked Manhattan like a kingdom above the clouds. Floor-to-ceiling windows reflected a life that seemed flawless—wealth, power, and absolute control.

But inside that beautiful apartment, Ethan Carter had never felt more broken.

His wife, Victoria, had invited several investors to celebrate the launch of their newest company. Champagne flowed. Cameras flashed. Everyone admired the perfect family image.

Except there was one problem.

Their five-year-old daughter, Lily, refused to call Ethan "Dad."

She clung tightly to her teddy bear, hiding behind the nanny every time he came near.

Victoria smiled through gritted teeth.

"Please... just pretend for tonight."

Ethan knelt before Lily.

"Can I hold your hand?"

The little girl stared into his eyes for several long seconds before quietly asking,

"Are you going to disappear again?"

The question froze every beat of his heart.

Nobody in the room understood why Ethan suddenly looked like he'd seen a ghost.

Because Lily had just repeated the exact words another child had spoken...

Eight years earlier.

A child he believed had died.

Trying to hide his emotions, Ethan gently smiled.

"I promise... not tonight."

Lily slowly placed her tiny hand in his.

The photographers exploded with excitement.

"The perfect family!"

"The billionaire and his beautiful daughter!"

The headlines were already writing themselves.

But across the room...

Victoria wasn't smiling anymore.

She watched Lily holding Ethan's hand with visible panic.

Because she knew something Ethan didn't.

And if Lily kept talking...

Everything Victoria had spent years hiding would collapse before sunrise.

Later that night, after the guests finally left, Ethan tucked Lily into bed.

She whispered,

"Daddy..."

His heart nearly stopped.

It was the first time she had ever called him that.

But her next sentence shattered him.

"...Mommy said I'm never supposed to tell you where I came from."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Ethan slowly turned toward the hallway.

Victoria had been standing outside the bedroom door...

Listening the entire time.

Their eyes met.

Neither of them spoke.

May you like

Because both knew...

The lie had finally started to crack.
