CHAPTER 7 — The Dead Man's Secret
The rescue team raised their weapons.
"Step away from the child!"
But Uncle Michael didn't move.
He simply smiled at Lily, gently brushing a strand of hair from her face.
"You've grown so much," he whispered.
Ethan stood frozen.
"It can't be you..."
Ten years ago, he had carried Michael's coffin himself.
He had watched soldiers fold the American flag.
He had delivered the eulogy.
"I buried you."
Michael nodded.
"You buried an empty casket."
The room fell silent.
Margaret slowly entered the cabin, tears streaming down her face.
"I begged him to stay hidden," she said. "It was the only way to keep him alive."
Ethan stared between them.
"Alive from who?"
Michael's expression hardened.
"From your father."
Everyone froze.
"The man you admired wasn't building an empire..."
"He was building a criminal network hidden behind that empire."
Victoria covered her mouth.
"The hospitals..."
"The charities..."
"The orphan foundations..."
Michael nodded.
"They were fronts."
He opened an old steel case that had been hidden beneath the cabin floor.
Inside were ledgers, encrypted hard drives, passports, and photographs linking politicians, judges, and powerful executives to secret financial transactions spanning two decades.
Ethan's hands trembled as he flipped through the evidence.
Every page carried one familiar signature.
Richard Carter.
His father.
"No..." Ethan whispered.
"He loved this family."
Michael looked directly into his eyes.
"He loved power more."
Just then, one of the investigators answered an emergency call.
His face turned pale.
"Mr. Carter..."
"The entire Carter Global headquarters has been taken over."
"The board has unanimously voted you out."
Ethan closed the folder.
"They can have the company."
Everyone looked at him in surprise.
"For the first time in my life..."
"I'm choosing my daughter."
But before anyone could leave...
Michael quietly added,
"Daniel expected you to say that."
