Chapter 3 - THE WEB OF BETRAYAL

The Interrogation RoomThe holding cell at the Denver Police Department smelled of stale coffee and cheap disinfectant. Derek sat handcuffed to a bolted metal table, his designer suit wrinkled, sweat pouring down his temples in thick, greasy rivulets. Paige sat in the adjacent interrogation room, hysterical, screaming that she had nothing to do with it while throwing Derek under the bus with every breath.

Detective Miller, a seasoned homicide veteran with thirty years on the force, slid a thick manila folder across the metal table.

"Care to explain why your wife's life insurance policy was signed over to an offshore shell company that you registered under a false alias three weeks before the 'accident'?" Detective Miller asked, tapping a pen against the steel tabletop.

"It’s a mistake! A clerical error!" Derek stammered, his voice cracking hysterically. "Sienna—she fell! It was a blizzard! I tried to save her!"

The heavy steel door swung open. Nathaniel Vance walked in, not wearing handcuffs, not wearing a police uniform, but wearing the tailored suit of a man who owned the building—and quite possibly the city. He pulled out a chair opposite Derek, sat down slowly, and crossed his legs.

"You didn't try to save her, Derek," Nathaniel said softly, his voice dangerously calm. "You didn't even check if she was breathing before you took Paige's hand and walked back to the SUV."

Derek stared at Nathaniel, recognition finally hitting him like a freight train. The media mogul, the untouchable billionaire who owned the insurance company—and the man holding Sienna's hand in the hospital room.

"You're... you're her father," Derek choked out, horror dawning in his eyes. "The old man from the letters... she wasn't just some orphan artist..."

"She is my flesh and blood," Nathaniel leaned forward, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "And you tried to execute her and my grandson for pocket change. Do you know what happens to men who steal from Vance Continental, Derek? You don't just go to a federal penitentiary. You go to a facility where the guards answer to me, and your sentence isn't measured in years. It's measured in agony."

The Secret LedgerBack at the penthouse overlooking downtown, I stood by the glass window holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the city lights blur through the rain. The media was in a feeding frenzy. Headlines blazed across every major news network: THE SILVER HOLLOW MIRACLE: BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS SURVIVES HUSBAND'S $50M MURDER PLOT.

Paige’s legal team had already abandoned her. Her parents had disowned her on live television. And Derek was facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy, insurance fraud, and child endangerment.

The door opened softly, and Nathaniel walked in, pouring two glasses of aged bourbon. He handed one to me.

"To new beginnings," he toasted quietly.

"To justice," I replied, clinking my glass against his.

"There's one more thing," Nathaniel said, pulling a weathered, leather-bound journal from his jacket pocket. It was my mother's diary—the one she kept before she passed away. "Your mother knew about Derek's family long before you ever met him. She knew his father was the one who drove our shipping company into bankruptcy twenty years ago. Derek didn't just target you for money, Sienna. He targeted you for revenge."

I looked down at the diary, my fingers tracing the faded ink of my mother's handwriting. The puzzle pieces clicked into place with terrifying clarity. Derek hadn't just married me out of greed; he had married me to destroy the Vance family from the inside out.

Only, he didn't realize he had awakened a sleeping giant.
