Chapter 4 - THE COLLATERAL DAMAGE

Paige's DesperationIn cell block 4B of the Denver County Detention Center, Paige Larkin paced frantically against the reinforced glass. Her glossy hair was unwashed, her designer clothes replaced by an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on her frame. She had tried calling Derek's private defense attorneys a dozen times, but every single one of them had disconnected her calls.

A guard clicked his keys against the metal bars. "Larkin. Visitor."

Paige gasped, rushing to the partition booth, thinking Derek had finally sent help. Instead, the heavy wooden chair on the other side scraped against the linoleum, and I sat down.

I picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver. Paige slowly picked up hers, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror.

"Sienna..." Paige whispered, her voice trembling through the static. "S-Sienna, please. I swear I didn't want him to push you. I told him not to! It was all Derek! He manipulated me!"

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I just stared at her through the thick, bulletproof glass.

"You watched him do it, Paige," I said, my voice echoing coldly in her earpiece. "You stood right beside him, checked if I was dead, and then helped him draft the alibi over a bottle of champagne at the lodge. You chose your bed. Now lie in it."

"Please! I'll tell the judge everything! I'll testify against him!" Paige sobbed, slamming her palm against the glass. "I have his burner phone! The texts where he planned the whole thing down to the minute!"

"I already have the burner phone, Paige," I replied smoothly, tapping a sleek black device against the glass partition. "Nathaniel's cyber-security team downloaded every single message, voice note, and GPS coordinate thirty minutes after we pulled you out of your apartment. Your testimony isn't needed anymore. You're just an accessory to attempted murder, looking at twenty-five years with no parole."

Paige collapsed against the glass, letting out a primal, ragged scream of absolute defeat as the guard dragged her away down the fluorescent-lit corridor.

The Corporate ExecutionWhile Derek sat in his cell waiting for arraignment, Nathaniel was busy executing the second phase of the plan: the total annihilation of Holt Industries.

In a glass-walled boardroom on the fortieth floor of the Holt Tower, three senior board members sat in stunned silence as Nathaniel slammed a thick portfolio onto the polished walnut table.

"As of twelve noon today," Nathaniel announced, his voice echoing with absolute authority, "Vance Continental has acquired ninety-four percent of Holt Industries' distressed debt. Your operating licenses have been revoked pending a federal audit for corporate fraud, money laundering, and illicit offshore transfers."

"You can't do that!" shouted Marcus Holt, Derek’s uncle and the nominal CEO of the company. "This is a hostile takeover! We’ll take you to the Supreme Court!"

Nathaniel leaned back, a cold, predatory smirk playing on his lips. "Try it. By the time your lawyers file the paperwork, every single asset your family owns—from this skyscraper to your vacation homes in the Hamptons—will belong to the Sienna Holt Trust. Your nephew tried to murder my daughter. I am simply liquidating his family legacy to pay for my grandson's college fund."

The board members slumped back in their chairs, realizing they had been utterly, mercilessly checkmated.
