Chapter 3 - A Viper in the Moonlight

Hook: When you poke a hornet's nest, you don't complain about the stings. But Nora never expected the first strike to hit so close to the heart.

Three weeks passed. Blackmere House transformed from a quiet, wealthy estate into an active war room.

Nora was no longer allowed to wear her maid’s uniform. Roman had high-end boutique clothing delivered directly to her room. She went from scrubbing floors to sitting at the grand dining table, sharing meals with the Don himself. It was a bizarre, surreal luxury, but the tension in the air was so thick it was palpable.

Roman was relentless. His men tore through Julian Vance’s drug dens and smuggling routes, cutting off the Syndicate's supply chains one by one. It was a calculated, brutal starvation tactic. Roman was drawing the snake out of its hole.

And tonight, the snake bit back.

It happened at 3:00 AM. Nora was jolted awake by the shrill, deafening blast of the estate's alarm system. Red emergency lights bathed her bedroom in a bloody glow.

Boom!

The distant sound of an explosion shook the foundation of the house. Panic, cold and familiar, seized Nora’s throat. She scrambled out of bed, her heart hammering against her ribs. They found me, her mind screamed. Julian is here.

She ran to her bedroom door, throwing it open just as Roman sprinted down the hallway. He was dressed in black, a vest strapped to his chest, holding an assault rifle with practiced ease.

"Nora! Stay down!" he shouted over the blaring sirens.

Before she could answer, the glass skylight above the grand staircase shattered into a million glittering shards. Two men dressed in black tactical gear rappelled down from the roof, automatic weapons firing blindly into the dark corridors.

Roman pushed Nora behind a marble pillar, shielding her body with his own. He spun around, firing three precise shots. The first two intruders fell heavily to the marble floor, their blood staining the pristine stone.

"Marcus! Report!" Roman roared into his tactical earpiece.

"They breached the south gate with a garbage truck filled with explosives, boss!" Marcus’s voice crackled through, punctuated by the sound of heavy gunfire. "It’s a hit squad! They aren’t here to negotiate—they’re trying to burn the whole place down!"

Roman gripped Nora’s shoulders. She flinched automatically, but this time, she didn't look away. She looked directly into his dark, fierce eyes.

"Nora, listen to me," Roman said, his voice a steady anchor in the chaos. "Marcus is going to take you to the underground bunker. You will be safe there. I have to clear the courtyard."

"No, Roman, don't leave me!" The words slipped out of her mouth before she could stop them. In the past weeks, despite her terror, Roman had become her protector, her anchor. The thought of him dying out there made her feel like she was suffocating.

Roman looked at her, a strange, intense emotion softening his harsh face for a fraction of a second. He reached out, his gloved hand gently cupping the back of her neck—careful, warm, and reassuring. "I am not going to die, Nora. I have a sister to find. And a maid to protect. Go!"

Marcus appeared from the shadows, his face bloodied but determined. He grabbed Nora's arm, pulling her toward the hidden service elevator.

As the elevator doors closed, Nora saw Roman turn back toward the gunfire, stepping into the fray like a god of war. But as the elevator plunged into the darkness beneath the earth, a horrifying realization washed over her.

The hit squad hadn't just attacked blindly. They knew exactly how to bypass the outer sensors. They knew the weak spot of the south gate.

There was a mole inside Blackmere House.
