Chapter 4 - The Price of Treason

Hook: The deadliest weapon isn't a gun in the hands of an enemy; it's a knife in the hands of a friend.

The underground bunker was silent, save for the hum of the air filtration system and the agonizing tick of the wall clock. Two hours had passed. Nora paced the cold concrete floor, her hands shaking so violently she had to lace her fingers together to stop them.

Finally, the heavy steel door hissed open.

Roman stepped inside. His face was smudged with soot, his knuckles barked and bleeding, but his eyes were burning with a terrifying, white-hot rage. Behind him, two guards dragged a man whose hands were zip-tied behind his back.

Nora gasped, covering her mouth. It was Leo, one of Roman’s top lieutenants—a man who had sat at the dinner table with them just days prior.

"Throw him against the wall," Roman commanded coldly.

The guards slammed Leo against the concrete. He groaned, spitting blood onto the floor, but he didn't look repentant. He looked at Roman with a twisted, envious sneer.

"Why, Leo?" Roman asked, his voice dangerously low, devoid of any emotion. "Twenty years we've been brothers. I gave you territory. I gave you wealth. I trusted you with my life."

"You became weak, Roman!" Leo spat, glaring at Nora. "You broke a fifteen-year truce with the Vanguard Syndicate over a piece-of-trash maid! Julian Vance offered me double my territory and a seat at the high table if I gave him the blueprints to the estate and delivered the girl! You're risking our entire empire for a ghost!"

Roman didn't yell. He didn't lose his temper. He simply walked over to Leo, pulled a silver switchblade from his pocket, and flicked it open. The blade gleamed under the harsh fluorescent lights.

"She isn't a ghost, Leo," Roman whispered, leaning in close. "She is the key to my sister. And you... you are a dead man walking."

"Wait!" Nora cried out, stepping forward.

Roman’s eyes snapped to her. "Stay back, Nora. This is mafia business."

"No, listen to him!" Nora insisted, her mind racing. "Leo said Julian wants me delivered. If Julian thinks he’s winning, he’ll be careless. He wants the ledger, Roman. He wants me dead so his secrets stay buried. Use me."

Roman’s expression hardened into granite. "Absolutely not. I am not using you as bait."

"It’s the only way to get to him!" Nora pleaded, tears of anger and determination brimming in her eyes. "You can squeeze his operations for months, but he will just hide deeper in his fortress. He will never let your sister go if he knows you're coming. But if Leo calls him right now and tells him he has me... Julian will come out to collect me himself."

Leo laughed mockingly through his bloody teeth. "She’s smarter than you are, Don Roman. Julian won't risk a full-scale war if he can just take her and slip away."

Roman stared at Nora. He saw the terror still lingering in her eyes, but beneath it, he saw a ferocious, unbreakable survival instinct. She was tired of running. She was tired of flinching.

Slowly, Roman turned his gaze back to Leo. He pressed the cold blade of the knife against Leo's throat, drawing a thin bead of crimson.

"You are going to make the call, Leo," Roman whispered. "You are going to tell Julian you have the girl. And if you drop a single hint, if your voice shakes by even a microtone... I will skin you alive in front of your family. Do you understand?"

Leo swallowed hard, his bravado instantly evaporating. "I... I understand."
