Chapter 5 - The Lion's Den

Hook: They say the truth will set you free. But in the underworld, the truth is just another word for an execution order.
The exchange location was an abandoned, fog-shrouded shipyard on the edge of the city. The skeletal frames of old cranes loomed overhead like prehistoric beasts in the midnight mist.
Nora sat in the back of a black SUV, her hands tied loosely in front of her with a breakaway zip-tie. Her heart was beating so hard she felt physically sick. Through the tinted glass, she saw the headlights of three luxury sedans tearing through the fog.
The Vanguard Syndicate had arrived.
The cars parked in a semi-circle, their headlights illuminating the empty pavement. From the center vehicle, a man stepped out. He was tall, dressed in a flawless tailored suit, with silvering hair and a face that looked like it belonged on a corporate billboard.
Julian Vance.
Nora’s entire body went rigid. The phantom pain of his fists from five years ago flared up instantly. She wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear. But then she remembered Roman.
Roman was hiding in the shadows of an empty shipping container just thirty yards away, along with twenty sniper-trained men. Hold it together, she told herself. Don't flinch.
Leo got out of the driver's seat of Nora's SUV, his face pale under his makeup, concealing his bruises. He walked over to Julian.
"Do you have her?" Julian asked, his voice smooth, aristocratic, and completely devoid of humanity.
"In the back," Leo said, his voice trembling slightly. "Where’s my payment, Vance? And where’s the girl Roman’s been looking for? You promised me leverage."
Julian snapped his fingers. One of his henchmen opened the rear door of his sedan and dragged out a young woman. She looked weak, her wrists bound, but her eyes—the exact same dark, fierce eyes as Roman’s—glared defiantly. It was Sofia Blackmere. She was alive.
Nora felt a sudden surge of adrenaline. It was really her.
"Bring out the maid," Julian commanded.
Leo walked back to the SUV and pulled Nora out into the cold night air. The moment Julian’s eyes landed on her, a cruel, satisfied smile spread across his face.
"Nora," Julian purred, stepping forward. "You look remarkably well for a dead woman. Did you really think you could hide from me forever? Did you think a low-life thug like Roman Blackmere could protect you?"
"I stopped running, Julian," Nora said, her voice louder and steadier than she ever thought possible. "And I didn't bury that ledger where you'll ever find it. It's already in the hands of people who can destroy you."
Julian’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, murderous sneer. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a silenced pistol. "Then you've outlived your usefulness. Goodbye, Nora."
Before his finger could squeeze the trigger, a red laser dot appeared directly on Julian’s forehead.
Thwip!
A sniper shot rang out from the darkness, tearing through Julian’s shoulder and spinning him to the ground. The bullet purposely missed his vitals—Roman wanted him alive.
"Ambush!" one of the Vanguard guards screamed.
Instantly, the shipyard erupted into chaos. Gunfire illuminated the fog like strobe lights. Leo tried to run, but a stray bullet caught him in the chest, dropping him instantly.
Nora dove to the ground, breaking her zip-ties with a fierce tug. She scrambled through the dirt toward Sofia, who was crawling away from the crossfire.
"Sofia! Come with me!" Nora shouted, grabbing the girl's arm.
But as she pulled Sofia toward the safety of a shipping container, a heavy boot slammed into Nora’s ribs. She gasped, the wind knocked out of her, rolling onto her back.
Julian Vance stood over her, his suit drenched in blood from his shoulder wound, his face twisted into the mask of a demonic madman. He pointed his gun directly at her head.
"If I'm going to hell tonight, Nora," Julian roared over the gunfire, "you're coming with me!"
May you like
Nora didn't close her eyes. She didn't cover her head this time. She stared right up the barrel of the gun.
BANG!
