Chapter 1

The very first thing Captain Samuel Ortega heard as he stepped out of the taxi was his wife telling Doña Mercedes that Elena, his mother, had dementia.
The second...
Was the dull thud of a fist pounding against a locked door on the second floor.
“Samuel!” Elena cried from inside. “Please... don't leave me here!”
Just 16 hours earlier, Samuel had been sitting aboard a military transport plane, dreaming about a cup of traditional Mexican coffee, his mother's homemade lemon pie, and Abigail running into his arms after eight long months of deployment.
Instead...
When he arrived at their home in Zapopan, he found Abigail standing on the front porch in a cream-colored dress, wearing a flawless smile as she calmly explained the family's "tragedy" as though she were chairing a neighborhood meeting.
“She gets disoriented,” Abigail said softly. “Sometimes she even hurts herself. We're looking for a care facility where professionals can look after her.”
Samuel glanced toward the upstairs window.
The curtain moved.
Abigail wrapped her arms around him.
But when he asked why his mother's bedroom was locked...
Her body stiffened.
“For her own safety.”
Samuel smiled.
“Of course, sweetheart.”
The Army had taught him one simple lesson:
The first person to panic gives away their position.
He waited until the neighbors left.
Carried his suitcase inside.
And pretended to be exhausted.
The key eventually appeared exactly where he expected—inside Abigail's jewelry box, hidden beneath the bracelet he had given her before deploying.
When he unlocked the bedroom door...
He found darkness.
A bare mattress with no sheets.
A plastic cup filled with water.
Elena sat against the wall wearing the same clothes she had worn the day before.
She had no phone.
No watch.
No shoes.
Dark purple bruises circled both of her wrists.
She slowly raised her head.
There was no confusion in her eyes.
Only anger.
“I'm not losing my mind.”
“I know,” Samuel replied.
Elena managed to explain that Abigail controlled all of her phone calls, hid her medication, and kept telling everyone she was suffering from "episodes."
Then footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Her expression changed instantly.
“Not yet,” she whispered.
“She checks everything.”
Samuel quietly closed the door before Abigail reached the hallway.
It hurt him to do it.
But Elena squeezed his hand first...
As if she already understood the plan without either of them saying another word.
That evening...
Abigail poured wine and spoke at length about Elena's supposed falls, attempts to wander away, and medical appointments Samuel knew had never happened.
She had already convinced the family doctor to recommend a psychiatric evaluation.
She even had notarized legal documents prepared to give herself authority over the house, the bank accounts, and every important decision...
All "because of Elena's incapacity."
“You've done so much for her,” Samuel said.
Relief flashed across Abigail's face.
She believed his military career had trained him to obey orders.
What she had forgotten...
Was that before joining the Army, Samuel had spent four years investigating financial fraud for the state prosecutor's office.
When he reviewed the home's security system...
He discovered Abigail had erased three months of surveillance footage.
But the cloud backup had preserved the access logs.
Every deleted file led directly to her laptop.
He also found Elena's bank statements being automatically forwarded to Abigail's email...
Along with a request to transfer $1,400,000 to an unfamiliar company.
Just after midnight...
Samuel hid a voice recorder beneath the kitchen table.
Changed every password.
And requested emergency family leave from the Army.
Then he quietly returned to his mother's room.
“Tomorrow, when we meet with the psychiatrist...”
“Pretend you're confused.”
Elena looked down at the bruises around her wrists.
Then she lifted her eyes and gave him a cold smile.
“How confused?”
Samuel leaned closer.
He explained the plan so quietly...
That even the walls couldn't hear it.
The next morning...
May you like
Abigail would take Elena to the psychiatrist, believing she was about to erase her mother-in-law's legal rights forever...
Never imagining that mother and son had already decided to let her keep talking...
