Chapter 2 - The Cage of Silk and Steel

By the time the sleek, armored Maybach tore through the rainy streets of the city, Mara realized she had simply traded one cage for another.

She sat as far away from Julian as the leather backseat allowed, clutching her damp canvas bag to her chest like a shield. Julian sat in the shadows of the vehicle, pouring two fingers of amber whiskey into a crystal glass. He didn’t offer her any.

"You’re smarter than you look," Julian said, breaking the silence. He took a slow sip. "Most people run away from me. You ran directly into my lap. Why?"

"I was desperate," Mara said, her voice shaking but resolute. "Evan... he doesn't stop. He has connections. He pays off the police. If I had walked out that door, I would have disappeared. Permanently."

Julian studied her over the rim of his glass. "And you think I won’t make you disappear?"

"You could," she admitted, looking him straight in the eye. "But you didn’t. You played along. Why?"

A dark, amused rumble vibrated in Julian’s chest. "Evan Sterling is the lead accountant for the Falcone syndicate. They’ve been skimming from my shipping docks for six months. When he walked into my club chasing a terrified girl, he handed me the perfect leverage. You aren't just a runaway, Mara. You are my new weapon."

The car pulled up to a massive, wrought-iron gate that opened into a sprawling, hyper-secure estate overlooking the cliffs of the bay. The mansion was a monolith of glass and black steel—beautiful, imposing, and heavily guarded.

Julian got out of the car, not waiting for her, but one of his men opened her door and gestured for her to follow. Inside, the house was clinical in its luxury. Julian stood in the grand foyer, removing his wet overcoat and handing it to a butler.

"From this moment on, you are my fiancée," Julian announced calmly, as if discussing a business merger. "You will wear the clothes I buy you. You will eat the food I provide. You will stand by my side at public galas, and you will look utterly, hopelessly in love with me. In exchange, Evan Sterling cannot touch you. The moment he tries, I will end him."

"And if I refuse?" Mara asked, her defensive instincts flaring.

Julian stepped closer, his towering frame casting a long shadow over her. "Then I open the front gates, call Mr. Sterling, and tell him where to pick up his luggage."

Mara looked at the marble floor, the weight of her reality crushing down on her. She had no money, no allies, and a monster behind her. The man in front of her was no saint, but at least he offered a gilded cage instead of a shallow grave.

"What do I have to do?" she whispered.

Julian smiled, a cold, striking expression that didn't reach his eyes. "First, we get rid of those wet clothes. Tomorrow, the city learns that Julian Vance is getting married."
