Chapter 3 - The Gilded Debut

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, champagne flutes, and whispers. The annual charity gala was the premier social event for both high society and the criminal elite who funded them.
Mara stood in front of the mirror in the private dressing room, staring at a woman she didn’t recognize. The cheap black dress was gone, replaced by a stunning, backless emerald silk gown that clung to her curves like a second skin. Her hair was swept up in an elegant, intricate updo, exposing the pale column of her neck. Around her neck sat a diamond necklace worth more than she would earn in three lifetimes.
"Keep your shoulders back," Julian’s voice echoed from the doorway.
He walked in, looking devastatingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo. He walked up behind her, his eyes meeting hers in the mirror. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a massive, flawless emerald ring. Taking her left hand, he slid it onto her ring finger.
"This belonged to my mother," Julian murmured, his hand lingering over hers. "If anyone asks, we met in Paris six months ago. It was love at first sight. You are private, shy, and utterly devoted to me. Can you play the part?"
"I’ve spent the last two years pretending everything was fine while my life was falling apart," Mara said, her gaze hardening. "I can play a happy bride."
"Good. Because our guests have arrived."
When Julian led her down the grand staircase, a hush fell over the ballroom. The media’s cameras flashed rapidly, capturing the ruthless Julian Vance holding his mysterious new fiancée close to his side. Mara smiled gracefully, leaning into Julian’s side, feeling the solid, comforting strength of his body. For a brief moment, the act felt dangerously real.
Then, she saw him.
Evan was standing near the bar, holding a champagne glass. Beside him was an older, heavyset man with a cruel sneer—Don Falcone himself.
Evan’s eyes locked onto Mara. The shock on his face was quickly replaced by a simmer of absolute fury. He began to walk toward them, but Don Falcone held up a hand, stopping him. Instead, Falcone and Evan approached Julian and Mara together.
"Julian," Falcone greated, his voice oily. "I didn't believe the rumors. The legendary bachelor, finally tamed? And by such a... stunning creature." Falcone’s eyes swept over Mara with predatory appreciation.
"Don Falcone," Julian replied, his voice smooth but laced with a lethal undertone. "I’m a man of specific tastes. When you find perfection, you secure it."
Evan stepped forward, his eyes burning into Mara’s. "Congratulations, Mr. Vance. It’s funny... your fiancée looks remarkably like someone I used to know. A girl from the suburbs who vanished with some... unfinished business."
Mara’s hand tightened on Julian’s arm.
Julian didn’t blink. He reached out and casually adjusted Evan’s bow tie, a gesture of supreme dominance that made Evan stiffen. "Mr. Sterling, I suggest you keep your eyes on your own ledger. Sometimes, looking too closely at another man's assets can get a person permanently liquidated."

Julian turned Mara away, leaving Evan standing in the middle of the ballroom, trembling with humiliated rage. But as they walked toward the dance floor, Mara caught a glimpse of Evan whispering to a dark-suited man near the exit.
A cold dread pooled in her stomach. Evan wasn’t backing down. He was planning something desperate.
