Chapter 4 - The Price of Treason

Three weeks into the arrangement, the lines between reality and the lie began to blur.

In the quiet hours of the night at the estate, Mara found herself talking to Julian in his study. Behind the ruthless mafia boss, she discovered a man of fierce intelligence, a tragic past of betrayal by his own family, and an unexpected, quiet protectiveness over her. They didn’t touch, but the lingering glances and the unspoken tension between them grew heavier with each passing day.

But peace in Julian's world was a temporary illusion.

It happened on a Tuesday night. Julian was away at a high-level meeting with his captains. Mara was in her bedroom, reading, when the estate’s power abruptly cut out.

The backup generators didn’t kick in.

Silence stretched over the dark mansion, followed by the muffled, unmistakable sound of a silenced gunshot from the courtyard below.

They’re inside.

Mara’s heart leaped into her throat. She remembered Julian’s instructions: If the security is ever compromised, go to the safe room behind the library.

She slipped out of her bed, navigating the dark hallways by memory. But as she reached the top of the grand staircase, a flashlight beam sliced through the darkness, catching her right in the eyes.

"Going somewhere, sweetheart?"

The voice belonged to Evan.

He stepped out of the shadows, flanked by three armed men wearing tactical gear. The clean, professional look he loved to project was gone; he looked disheveled, manic, and wild.

"Evan," Mara whispered, backing away. "You’re insane. Julian will kill you for this."

"Julian is currently trapped in an ambush on the highway," Evan sneered, walking up the stairs toward her. "He’s a busy man tonight. By the time his men clear the road, you’ll be gone, and Falcone will have the leverage he needs to make Vance surrender his shipping routes."

Evan grabbed her arm, his grip bruisingly tight. Mara fought back, kicking and scratching, but one of the armed men hit her in the back of the neck with the butt of his gun.

Darkness claimed her.

When Mara woke up, she was tied to a wooden chair in a damp, concrete basement. The smell of mold and gasoline filled the air. A single lightbulb swung overhead.

Evan stood in front of her, holding a knife. He ran the flat of the cold blade down her cheek.

"You thought you were safe because you sat on his lap?" Evan hissed, his face twisted in jealous rage. "You’re nothing to him, Mara. A toy. A shield. I’m going to call him now, and we’re going to see just how much he’s willing to pay to get his pretty little fake fiancée back."

Evan pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and put it on speaker.

After two rings, Julian’s voice answered. It was deadly calm, completely devoid of panic. "Sterling."

"I have her, Vance," Evan laughed, his voice echoing in the concrete room. "The girl, your ring, your pride. If you want her back in one piece, you bring the harbor deeds to the old ironworks on Pier 9. Alone. You have one hour."

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line.

"You made a mistake, Evan," Julian said softly. "You assumed I care about the deeds."

"If you don't show, she dies!" Evan screamed.

May you like

"I’m already at the ironworks, Evan," Julian replied. "And you aren't leaving."

The line went dead.
