CHAPTER 1 – The Rainy Night That Changed Everything

Rain hammered the empty highway like thousands of tiny bullets.
At exactly 2:17 a.m., Ethan Carter pulled into a lonely gas station, exhausted after driving for nearly six hours. The station looked abandoned except for a single elderly man standing quietly beside Pump Three, his thin coat soaked through by the storm.
Something about the old man felt... familiar.
Ethan tried to ignore it as he stepped out of his car, but when the stranger slowly turned his face toward him, time seemed to stop.
His heart nearly exploded.
Those tired blue eyes...
That crooked nose...
The faded baseball cap...
"No..." Ethan whispered.
"It can't be you."
The old man stared back with the same expression—confused, frightened, almost guilty.
For twenty-five years, Ethan had imagined this moment.
He had dreamed of screaming at this man.
Punching him.
Demanding answers.
Because this was the man who had vanished the night Ethan's mother died.
The man the police never found.
The man everyone believed had stolen millions before disappearing without a trace.
His own father.
Richard Carter.
The father who abandoned his wife.
The father who abandoned his eight-year-old son.
The father Ethan had buried in his heart long before anyone declared him legally dead.
Richard slowly lowered the gas pump, his trembling hands barely able to hold it.
"Ethan?"
Just hearing his name spoken in that familiar voice sent a wave of anger crashing through him.
"You don't get to say my name."
People inside the convenience store began watching through the windows as the two men stood in the pouring rain.
Richard swallowed hard.
"I've looked for you..."
"Liar!"
Ethan's voice echoed across the empty station.
"My mother begged for you."
"She died waiting."
"And I grew up believing you chose money over your family."
Richard closed his eyes.
Rain mixed with tears running down his wrinkled face.
"I never stole anything."
"I never left because I wanted to."
Ethan laughed bitterly.
"You expect me to believe that after twenty-five years?"
Richard reached slowly into the pocket of his old raincoat.
Ethan instantly stepped backward.
"What are you doing?"
Instead of a weapon...
Richard pulled out a faded photograph sealed inside a worn plastic sleeve.
The picture showed a smiling young couple holding a little boy between them.
The little boy was Ethan.
On the back, written in faded ink, were four heartbreaking words:
"Find him when it's safe."
Ethan's breathing stopped.
His mother had written those words.
He recognized her handwriting instantly.
Richard looked around nervously, as if someone might be watching them even now.
Then he leaned closer and whispered something Ethan never expected to hear.
"They finally found me."
Before Ethan could ask who "they" were...
A black SUV rolled silently into the gas station.
Then another.
Then a third.
All three vehicles stopped without a single sound.
The headlights switched off simultaneously.
Several men in dark suits stepped into the rain.
One of them smiled.
Not kindly.
Like someone who had waited twenty-five years to finish unfinished business.
Richard's face turned white.
He grabbed Ethan's arm.
"They know you're my son."
"And if we don't run..."
May you like
"They'll kill us both."
