CHAPTER 5 – The Vault Opened... But Ethan Was Never Meant to Leave Alive

Richard's body lay motionless on the rain-soaked pavement.

For several long seconds, no one moved.

Then Ethan slowly knelt beside his father.

He wasn't crying anymore.

The tears had stopped the moment he realized something terrifying.

Richard had sacrificed himself... not to save Ethan's life.

But to buy him time.

Behind him, Daniel checked his watch.

"You have twenty-three hours and fifty-three minutes."

He nodded toward the black SUVs.

"Bring him."

Before the armed men could touch Ethan, the roar of motorcycles shattered the silence.

The bikers charged through the police barricade like a tidal wave of steel.

Smoke grenades exploded across the station.

Visibility disappeared.

Someone grabbed Ethan's arm.

"Run!"

It was his mother.

She dragged him into the woods behind the station, weaving through the trees until the sounds of gunfire faded into the distance.

Nearly an hour later, they reached an abandoned hunting cabin deep in the mountains.

For the first time in twenty-five years, mother and son sat alone.

Neither spoke.

Finally, she placed an old leather journal on the table.

"I've hidden this since the night I disappeared."

Ethan opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Handwritten notes.

Maps.

And one newspaper clipping with a headline that froze his blood.

"Fire Kills Carter Family's Newborn Son."

The date was exactly twenty-five years ago.

Ethan frowned.

"That's impossible."

"I'm standing here."

His mother's hands began to tremble.

She looked away.

"No..."

"The baby who died..."

"...wasn't you."

The room fell silent.

Ethan stared at her.

"What did you just say?"

She took a deep breath.

"The night Daniel came for us, I gave my real baby to someone I trusted."

Ethan's heart pounded so loudly he could barely hear her.

"I switched you with another infant at the hospital."

"You survived."

"The other child didn't."

Ethan's face turned pale.

"So..."

"...I'm not Ethan Carter?"

His mother slowly shook her head.

"You are."

"But not by birth."

The words struck harder than any bullet.

"You were adopted."

Richard knew.

She knew.

Daniel knew.

Only Ethan had spent twenty-five years living a lie.

Before he could speak, the old satellite phone on the table rang.

Neither of them had told anyone where they were.

His mother answered cautiously.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then a calm male voice broke the silence.

"Don't open Vault 914."

"If you do..."

"...the United States will lose its next president."

The line went dead.

Ethan stared at the phone.

"What does that even mean?"

His mother looked terrified.

"It means the vault isn't holding money."

"It isn't holding evidence."

She slowly opened the journal to its final page.

Taped inside was a faded birth certificate.

The father's name was blank.

The mother's name had been blacked out.

Only one line remained visible.

Child's Name: Project HEIR – Subject 01

Ethan felt his entire body go numb.

"What... is Project HEIR?"

His mother whispered the words she had feared for twenty-five years.

"It wasn't the vault they were protecting..."

May you like

"It was you."
