CHAPTER 3 – The Bullet That Exposed the Real Monster

The rain seemed to disappear.
Ethan could hear only his own heartbeat as his mother aimed the pistol directly at Richard's chest.
"Tell him," she said coldly. "Tell our son why I disappeared."
Richard slowly raised his hands.
"I was trying to protect you."
She laughed.
A hollow, broken laugh.
"No... you were trying to protect yourself."
The men in black suits watched without moving.
None of them fired.
It was as if they had been waiting twenty-five years for this exact conversation.
Ethan looked from one parent to the other, unable to breathe.
"Someone tell me the truth!"
Richard reached into his pocket and carefully removed a small silver flash drive.
"I've carried this every single day since that night."
He handed it to Ethan.
"It contains every bank transfer... every recording... every name involved."
Ethan stared at the tiny device.
"So Uncle Daniel..."
Richard interrupted him.
"Worked for them."
His mother finished the sentence.
"So did I."
Ethan's knees nearly gave out.
"You... what?"
Tears streamed down her face.
"I was Daniel's accountant. I discovered millions of dollars were being laundered through our family business."
"I wanted to go to the FBI."
Richard lowered his head.
"But I stopped her."
Ethan felt sick.
"Why?"
Richard looked directly into his son's eyes.
"Because I wasn't innocent."
Silence.
"I never stole from the company..."
He swallowed hard.
"...but I was their security chief."
"I knew what they were doing."
"I accepted their money."
"I looked the other way."
His voice cracked.
"I thought I was protecting my family."
"But the moment your mother threatened to expose everyone... they marked us for death."
Ethan's hands shook violently.
"So everything they told me..."
Richard nodded.
"Was built on one terrible truth mixed with a thousand lies."
Suddenly, the leader of the suited men began clapping slowly.
"Beautiful."
He stepped forward, smiling.
"What a touching family reunion."
He removed his gloves.
Ethan recognized the expensive watch on his wrist.
His heart stopped.
The watch.
His uncle Daniel wore that exact custom-made watch every day.
The stranger smiled wider.
"You've grown up believing Daniel was your uncle."
He removed his glasses.
"I suppose it's time you learned who I really am."
Richard's face turned ghost white.
"No..."
The man smiled.
"Oh yes."
"My name isn't Michael."
He took one final step forward.
"My name..."
"...is Daniel Carter."
Ethan's entire world collapsed.
The man who had raised him...
The man who attended every birthday...
The man who cried at his mother's funeral...
The man Ethan trusted more than anyone...
Had been hunting his own family for twenty-five years.
Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a remote control.
He pressed a single button.
Every phone in the gas station buzzed at the same time.
Televisions inside the convenience store suddenly switched on.
Breaking News flashed across every screen.
"FUGITIVE RICHARD CARTER LOCATED AFTER 25 YEARS."
Richard's photo filled the screen.
Below it appeared one word in giant red letters:
WANTED.
Daniel smiled.
"I've already told the world exactly where your father is."
Police sirens echoed from every direction.
Helicopters appeared through the storm clouds.
Richard looked at Ethan one last time.
"They're coming for me..."
He forced the flash drive back into Ethan's hand.
"...but after today..."
May you like
"...they'll be coming for you."
